Make a long story short, my 6 year old son decided to help dad by "cleaning" my 5 gallon bucket full of federal field & target hulls....needless to say, they all hot very wet and the fiber base swelled up and closed the primer holes on pretty much every single hull....My question is am I able to salvage the hulls? Maybe wait until the completely dry to see the extent of the damage?

Question on soggy shotshell hulls
Tags: None -
I think there a gonner. It just aint worth it plus the steel bases will be rusted around the primer hole and under the rim. I didnt think anybody had any interest in loading those hulls. I know it can be done but theres better hulls out there like AAs and STS with real brass bases and no base wad. I do like the smell though of hulls with paper base wads when there fired..Cowboy Action Shooter

I usually get 2-3 reloads out of them.....oh well. I have a bunch of STS....come to think of it, my son probably seen me clean the STS and thought he would help out...just picked the wrong hulls to clean that way....thanks for the response....Comment

Go to the shotgun range and pick up all the Top Gun and Estate hulls you want. They are probably the most plentiful hulls you'll find left on the ground next to the Winchester Universal hulls (which really are garbage, don't pick those up). The Top Gun/Estate hulls load the same as the other Fed hulls and are so plentiful you can let 'em fly after one reload if you want.
Never pick up or use a Fed/Estate hull that may have gotten even moist. The base can separate and get stuck in the barrel. Your next shot can result in a bulged barrel.Last edited by rsrocket1; 12-29-2012, 7:14 AM.Comment

Be thankful, your 6 yr old wanted to help you.Actually I only started collecting Milsurps 3 years ago. I think I might own about 24...They're cheaper than guns that will most likely never get the opportunity to kill somebody...
I belong to the group that uses firearms, and knows which bathroom to use.

Yeah...I am glad he wants to help. I'm starting him early....he likes doing all the nonhazardous monotonous stuff...he really likes to deprime/resize my heaps of 9mm cases....about the only thing he has strength to do....Lesson learned...."you can was the green ones only"...lolComment
