.30-30 190gr bullets?

I'm looking for a 190gr bullet load for a Winchester .30-30 Model 94. The Lyman handbook recommends Winchester 190gr Silvertips, but they are or were only to be had in .303 Savage loads and were not offered for sale as a separate component.

I have some Sierra 190gr BTHP Matchkings and was thinking of trying those with either Win 748 or IMR 4064 powder. I can't find any data for this weight bullet on a .30-30. I use 42gr of 4064 with this bullet on a bolt action .308 match rifle with excellent accuracy, but the Model 94 action is not as strong, so a lower powder charge is probably called for.

Has anyone had any experience with 190's in a .30-30?

The good news is 42grs of IMR 4064 won't fit in that case, so no problems. I think maybe 34grs +/- will be about all you will be able to stuff in that case for that bullet. 190gr is a pretty heavy bullet for that caliber. You could always do it the old fashioned way and work a load up. Say start at 25grs of 4064 and work your way up one grain at a time, watching for signs of overpressure, Velocity is going to be pretty punk best case, say 1900fps at max?

Almost forgot, you want to single load those as well. Don't want those pointy bullets against the primers in the tube.

Yes, flat point ONLY in tubular magazine rifles!

I'm guessing that you're looking at the same 1970's Lyman handbook I have, which mentions that combo as an accurate load. It would probably work if you could find the correct ingredients but I don't think substituting a Matchking bullet would work since it is much longer than the Silvertip and probably wouldn't stabilize in the 1-12 twist of the Model 94 at the 1800 ish fps mentioned. If I were to guess a flatbase match bullet about the same length as a typical 170gr roundnose might work, perhaps something intended for the .300 AAC Blackout?

I've never even seen a 190 grainer for the .30-30!
