CCI 400 or 41 Primers

I am currently using CCI 400 primers for my 223 loads. Loading 55gr FMJ with Varget powder. I am working up my loads, so far at 23.7 gr.

My question is I will eventually be making some loads for 60-70gr bullets and wondering if I should use the CCI 41 military primers or if CCI 400s will be okay.

400 should be ok, i like remington 7 1/2 bench rest primers for precision loads, and use winchester primers in my plinking loads.

Which winchester primer do you use? I had heard that Winchester had/has some issues with semi-autos. Will be using in a semi-auto and if there are issues probably do not want to go that route.
I also heard that Remington was pretty good.

I use CCI400's for my blasing and short line loads and CCI BR-4's for my long range stuff... I also use Federal SR primers for my blasting loads with no problems at all....

CCIs are good primers. #400 or #41 or BR4... all good.

But you would need to know that their differences DO affect the final performance of your round, ie. muzzle velocity. So, don't interchange them and expect exactly same results.

With that said you can use either one. #41 seems to be hotter than #400 and BR4, and BR4 seems to be more "consistant" than the other 2. And for plinking rounds, #400 is fine. Yet, if you can afford it, you can go #41 (marketing say that it is designed for semi-auto military rounds... lol)

If you are worried about slam fire use #41; otherwise use #400. 6MM guys recommend #400 over BR4:

CCI 400's work fine. In fact any primers "work" fine. They will all perform a little differently, but will all ignite the powder charge. Some are a little bigger than others, so will fit more snuggly with loose pockets. And some have thicker cups, so are a little tougher. The 400's have thin cups, so flatten quite easily. One can attain much higher velocities with the other CCI primers.

From my personal experience, #41 do perform a little bit better than BR4..... wrt velocity.

I read that with #41 and BR4 in a recent magazine article I saw a couple days ago (wish I would have bought the magazine or remember the title) that the MOA was a lot tighter than with #400. Also a lot more consistent. Might buy a pack of 41 and BR4 and give it a try to see if the difference for my application is worth the cost.

Just like EVERYTHING about reloading.... YMMV!!

It may just so happen that the particular powder likes #400 more than #41 or BR4.... I don't think you can make a generalization between #400, #41 and BR4

I have CCI 400s and a few hounded wolf .223 SR primers. i was thinking of using the wolf precision loads with hornaday vmax 60 grain boolits and CCI 400s with ammobros 45 grain projectiles for blasters

how does that sound?
