Got a quick question for all of you. I have a friend that wants to start reloading 45-70. He has a Marlin 1895 with a 22" barrel. He wants to use it to hunt pig. So does anyone have a load that they really like for a comparable rifle? Any load data would be appreciated. Thanks guys!

45-70 Loads
sigpicIf you loan someone twenty dollars and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

Been hunting with the 45/70 for a long time now.. I load only the 300 jhp as hot as the book saids.. they seem to shoot flater than the 405`s out to 200 yards anyhow... Funny thing I`ve never taken a shot further than 75 yards and I`ve never take 2 shots at the same Game with that round.... -
Right now I am using a 430 grain home cast slug with 35 grains of IMR 4198 in a Marlin 1895 with a 22" barrel. same would work for the 405 gr. oregon trail slugs and others. Like Big Jon said it only takes one hit.

The 300 grain loads are easier on the shoulder as well.
I use 350 Grain for hunting pig.
#1 CCI 200 primer, 49.8gr of R-7, Hornady 350 round nose
#2 CCI 200 primer, 56 gr of IMR-3031, Hornady 350 round nose
I found the recipies on a forum after checking for powder profiles I went ahead and loaded some. I am happy with the results."I would kill for a Nobel peace prize." Steven Wright"

1895G Loads
I've worked up a couple that are easy shooters but dang effective:
Hornady 300g HP
Fed210M
W-W Brass
H4198 51g
2.525 OAL
1925fps in my 1895G for the extra 3.5" of barrel figure right about 2000 fps target. MOA load in my rifle. At this speed it goes +3 @ 100, +0.5 @ 150 and -6.5 @ 200 giving a good effective range while not pushing the bullet beyond its design limits. Keep the speeds in this range and you don't have to worry about it over expanding or blowing up and not penetrating.
Laser Cast 350g FP
CCI200
R-P Brass
Rx7 45g
2.525 OAL
1740 fps in my 1895G. No leading and 1.5" @ 100 accuracy. This velocity gives you +3 at 100 and -9 @ 200.
Neither load is over 28k PSI and either will do the job for deer and pig. Your buddy has a nice round to reload for. If you want soft and accurate for plinking GMDR.com makes some interesting reading. Alliant's online data for Rx7 and 2400 is good, and Hogdgon's online data is great for those occasional testosterone attacks.

Just wanted to say thanks for all the replies. Looks like I have some good data to get him started. He will tweak the loads to his liking, but it is always nice to start with loads that people have personal experience with. Again thanks!sigpicIf you loan someone twenty dollars and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

I love those 405gr LaserCast bullets in my 26" 1886! With BLC-2 powder it's an easy shooter out to 200yds. The only guns I have that hit harder are the .50s!
Here's a 12" saw blade hit 4 times (missed on the initial sighting shot) at 100yds off-hand.
