I have some surplus ammo for my mossin (762x54R), i was wondering if i could pull the tip and reuse the case, powder, and primer with a non magnetic tip in the same weight?

Yes - just make sure the bullet is the same weight or less and doesn't have an obviously greater "bearing surface" (which is unlikely). That's called "Mexican Match" - and is just slang, not any kind of racial thing.

when you say "bearing surface" that means the diameter of the bullet?

Bearing surface is the part of the bullet that contacts the bore. Since 7.62x54R bullets are "pointy" - you shouldn't have any problem. Bearing surface tends to be more of an issue with pistol rounds due to differing nose profiles.

Given the caliber - I think it would be worth your while to slug the bore to see for sure what diameter of bullets would be best. While the bullet generally used is suppose to be .312 you might find that your bore would be tighter - enough that .308 diameter bullets could shoot well. It's something you won't know until you try and test it.

As a help to pull the bullet, it may have a sealer on it so by pushing the bullet in first (just a bit), it would break the seal and make pulling a bit easier.

Another suggestion is to pool the powder of all the pulled cartridges and then reweigh the powder uniformly to achieve a more consistent load.

Surplus powder charges typically can vary a good amount.

And you can sell the pulled bullets if your not going to use them.

                  "pool the powder"
Bad idea -- you have no way of knowing if the powder is all the same kind or the same lot--
Just cause it looks the same does not make it the same --

If all the ammo in question came in the same spam can or crate, then yes, it's the same powder lot, and it'd be safe to combine and then re-weigh. The powder lot # will be stamped on the outside of the spam can or crate. If you cannot verify for sure that they're the sme powder lot, though, then I wouldn't mix 'em.

I guess this is for ranges which don't allow Mosin spam?

Regardless, the answer should be, "Yes." It shouldn't be an issue. As stated above, make sure not to mix the powders.

Those bullets have value as well. I remember sitting on certain websites waiting for batches of those pulled bullets to come up. Never did get a lot of them.

You're right. It should be disclaimered to only do this with cartridges out of the same can. I was assuming that was the case
