    Another 223 reloading question

I was able to find tons of info on reloading 223, but I still have a very simplistic question.

When reloading 223 on a progressive press (I have a Hornady LNL), is it like reloading for pistol, meaning you set up the dies and that's it... you start reloading? Or are there any additional steps required before getting started on the press (besides tumbling)? Any other case prepping? I understand that military brass has a crimp on the primer pocket. Can that be taken care of as part of the progressive steps, or does it have to be done before? Thanks.

You have to swage military brass before loading. For me it requires 2 passes
1st pass would be to tumble, lube, full size/deprime, trim, swage, tumble
2nd pass prime, powder, seat, crimp

There is more prep work required for bottleneck brass vs pistol

Thanks. I just found this post, and it looks like there are more passes.

Yes, Case prep first then you can load it on a progressive. I hate the case prep part so I get it done commercially by Mat in Arcadia. I think about $35.00 per thousand. Such a bargin for the time saved.

That is cool! I was going to give up on the idea of reloading 223 just because of the prepping, but having that part done sounds much better. How does it work, do you mail him your brass, or order brass online and have it sent to him? Oh... and who's Mat in Arcadia :-) How to get in touch with him?

Now I finally found the "Processing bulk" sticky, which describes everything in detail. Should have seen it before asking...

Anyway, as much as I would like to do it, I just don't know if I have the time for all of that. I can barely find the time to reload for handguns. I'm really disappointed... I wanted to get an AR but I'm not gonna do it if I can't reload. I might get a Saiga and use the cheap, crappy ammo for plinking.

You could always buy pre-processed brass to save a lot of time. Then load 5,000 rounds up and shoot all year before having to do it again. Why load 200 per week when you can load 5-10k in a weekend and get it over with.

Bulk quantities are MUCH cheaper too. If you want I can tell you where to buy all the stuff dirt cheap.

Yes, I would be interested in that! I just read though several reports of people having some problems with pre-processed brass (length, or something...). If you have a reliable source, I would appreciate any info. Anything to make me feel better about getting an AR :-)

Thanks. Hopefully they'll restock soon. It seems than many places are out of stock.

Excuse my ignorance, but when I look at this, is that brass that's ready to go through the "standard" progressive stations?

No, it must be resized and trimmed (if needed).
