Alliant Promo

According to Alliant it is "red dot" before the new and cleaner burning formula was released & is slightly more dense.

Anybody use it? It is pretty darn cheap 88$ per 8lb @ and only sold in 8 lb containers. Im looking to use it in 12 gauge.

I use it in .38, 7.62x54R, 9mm, and plan to use it for 12 gauge when I get around to finding the right wads.

Goes bang, pretty bulky, cheapest factory new powder out there.

It is a blend of powders made to shoot like Red Dot by weight, not volume. It can be used in the same applications as Red Dot (pistol, shotgun, low recoil rifle). Very good substitute for Red Dot if you can get it locally and not pay hazmat+shipping or in large quantities. Like Red Dot, keep the pressures up and you'll keep the unburned flakes out of the barrel. If you download your shot (I'm down to 3/4 oz in 12ga), you might not like Red Dot/Promo very much, but for 1 oz or 1-1/8 oz, it's a very good powder.

That's what I use. The only difference between using Red Dot and Promo is that you'll have to use different bushings since the density of the powder is different. Otherwise, you can use the same load data.

Promo was never an old Red Dot recipe. It is overruns and leftovers of various powders. Each lot of Promo is a different mixture. Alliant uses graphite to match the performance of Red Dot by weight. That is why it is dirty.

If you load by volume, very likely so, you need to weight each new lot number of promo. Promo is or was cheap, but I mostly use Clay Dot and e3 now. E3 has better cold weather performance.

Since I shoot reloads in and O/U or a Beretta Urika, dirty powders are not so much an issue. I still have to clean the barrels as with Promo.
