Finally bought the gear...

Well I have been toying with the idea of reloading my own ammo for about a year and finally decided to pull the trigger. I went with the simple Lee Turret press to get the hang of things. It's funny how even after reading many books, watching videos, reading posts, it's nothing like setting it up and doing it yourself.

And of course I already have a question. I never really paid attention to the brass I picked up from my AR, I just kept it cause I knew I would reload one day. So I have been cleaning the brass and I noticed that almost every shell has a dent in it. Is this an issue?

Congrats on the turret. Good choice. I would swing that powder measure around so it's more centered over the press, but I'm sure it'll work fine like that as well.

You don't have to worry about the dents. The next firing will completely remove them of your sizing die doesn't.

I will tell you this. I built an AR a couple years ago and installed the little black grommet that BCM gives you with their BCG. My brass was hitting the brass deflector on the way out of the gun and denting just like yours. It never really bothered me so I didn't change anything.

I recently just built another AR and left the black grommet out this time. The new AR functions perfect and ejects just to where it's suppose to without the grommet and the brass doesn't hit the brass deflector on the way out.

Not sure what you're running, but maybe something to check out.

I am actually going to add another riser so that I don't have to mess with the powder riser hitting my primer feed. I tried swinging it around with the primer feed, but its a complete PITA

Thanks for the tip on the grommet I will look into that. I have Spikes lower on my AR so I will do some Google searches to see what I can find.

No problem. The grommet went under the extractor in the bolt carrier group which added more pressure to it.

I'm no AR expert, but if I was going to do a search I'd search how to adjust brass extraction. It'll have to do with the upper not the lower.

1) Keep an eye on the size of the .223 trimmer pilot on that Lee Zip Trim. They do wear down and you will be trimming your brass too short before you know it.
2) Take the Lee priming equipment and put it back in the box and buy a hand primer. Hand priming is at least twice as fast and a hell of a lot less frustrating. You will thank me later.

The dent will go away when fired again as it will fire form back to your chamber. To deal with the dents it usually means your rifle is over gassed. Try a heavier buffer. Good looking setup btw. It's addicting lol eventually you'll take over half the garage.

Something else to be aware of is some 223 brass has crimped primers and you'll need to swage them. A very easy process and lots of products out there that will do it.

I did pickup a hand priming tool too. I didn't know if that auto prime was going to work. When you hand prime do you remove the auto index, pull the resize die, or just make certain you skip that die on the turret press? Hate to pop off my primers I just put on.

I had a Lee Classic Cast Turret and found the safety prime very reliable. I only loaded about 20K rounds on it before I got my Dillon, but in that time it worked great. I did find putting a washer under the mount helped, the alignment of the carrier to the primer arm cup is important for reliable feed.

The problem I have now is the powder measure hits the auto-prime so I figure get another riser and that will fix it. If I back it out so it doesn't hit the powder measure is loose. I will fiddle with it more later this week and see if I can get it to work. Worse case I go to manual prime.
