    Silica Packets

Are Silica Packets in ammo cans overkill?

Air is usually pretty humid but I dont open the cans often.

The 3gr packets should do. I will probably just buy 50 to get the price break.

Nope many people do this, I dont mainly because my ammo is in the safe with a dehumidifier.

I stick silica gel packets everywhere. I work with a lot of shipped equipment, and a lot of it is packaged with either the 28g or the 448g bags.

Stuck a 448 in the safe, a 28 in the range bag, and i've collected a trash bag full of the 1g packets to stick in my ammo cans. I don't see how it's overkill.

I have them everywhere, in ammo cans, range bag, ammo boxes, the safe, gun boxes.
I will share my opinion and my load data, BUT I am just a guy with too many cigars and too many guns. Whatever I say is probably wrong.

I use a pelican desiccant in my giant ammo box. The silica gel inside turns from blue to pink and then I throw it in the oven at 300 degrees for a few hours.

              Do the packets effectiveness degrade?

Going against the grain I do not use them and have never had a problem. I have some ammo that I have stored over 40 years. However I do not think they would hurt unless they are laying on the ammo directly.

Your ammo fits in your "the safe"? Either you have a really big safe or not enough ammo.

What can it hurt? I throw the ones I get for free in packages, etc. in my ammo cans

Keep them in my pistol bags, keeps them from building surface rust.

Added this in the ladies forum, but it works here too.....

Winter is coming and the moisture is in the air. If you want to protect your ammo and don't want to spend a fortune on those little silica bags then you can use this trick. Buy "crystal" Tidy Cat, cat litter and add a small scoop to a coffee filter. Fold over and staple top. Voila! Silica packets to put in your ammo cans, range bag or gun safe. Cheap easy way to keep the moisture out.

I don't expect everything handed to me. Just set it down anywhere. Unknown
