    9mm Hollow or Flat Base?

    Hi folks;

Before I get my question out I want to ask for solid answers w/o anger or personal attacks. The last time I asked a question on another web site, it started a fire fight between some of the other guys.

    So here is my question:

Reloading a 9mm Luger: Do you recommend the HOLLOW or FLAT BASE?

    and WHY?

    Thanks

It depends on what you are loading for.

    But hollow what?

A hollow point bullet can have a flat base and usually do.

I'm looking for round nose hollow base hard cast bullets for loadind .38 S&W. I like using HBs for these since the dia. of the bores can vary greatly for gun to gun. If you have a source for HB .355, let me know, I'll try them. As for 9mm, I just use bevelled (but otherwise flat) based hardcasts because that what my H&G 8 cav. mould gives me. If your planning on shooting several different guns with worn or out of (modern) spec barrels, HB bullets might help you. But, if all your shooting is modern 9mm firearms, it really shouldn't matter.

        What he said...

I believe the hollow base helps the bullet to engage the rifling a little better but in modern guns I dont see it having any difference. Buy what is cheeper.

I use bevel base lead bullets.
They are easier to deal with on a progressive press.

9mm Hollow Base or Flat Base

            Sorry

I missed a word in that question. Hollow base VS flat base bullets. I see both advertised for reloading. I was just curious if it made any difference in accuracy, velocity/energy? Midway offers Winchester FMJ in both flat & hollow base bullets.

H.P.'s are not designated flat base or hollow base.

            Thanks

Hollow based bullets are generally used for low pressure black powder rounds and are very soft. Since you have to load the bullets manually they are a little undersized so that they are easier to load. Upon ignition the base of the bullet (skirt) is blown out to engrave the rifling. Using these soft bullets in a higher pressure modern cartridge will result in a lot of lead depositing in your barrel, give you horrible accuracy and a major PIA cleaning requirement.
