some progressive questions

probably stupid questions........ but, i was wondering about some shell casing steps and how they are done with progressives.

im a single stage loader, and thinking about getting into progressives. so i shoot a ton of .223 and was wondering when it comes to trimming and removing the primer pocket crimp, how that works on a progressive???? does trimming get done before the brass is put on the press??? does the crimp get removed in the progressive???

Well it depends on your setup. Some people have the dillon trimmer that is basically a die. Some decap and size on a single and then do everything else on progressive.

thank you for that, it was interesting. this guy is taking it to an almost professional level here. i have given thought to getting into the reloading business, but after looking into all the paperwork, taxes, insurance, ETC. just doesn't seem to be worth it.

I reload .30-06 on a progressive and break it into 3 steps: resize/decap, brass prep, prime/charge/seat. Just because you have a progressive doesn't mean you have to do everything at once.

Autoloading bottleneck rifle cartridges on a progressive is almost as time consuming as a single stage press, especially if you have a mix of crimped primers in the bunch. You are probably better off with the ss press.

Do your cases in big batches and you can have a big tupperware container full of trimmed, prepped and primed brass where all you need to do is to drop the powder and seat the bullet one case at a time. You never have to worry about missed or double charges.

I preform my brass prep with a SS press. If I'm doing more than 500 rounds at a time, I might use my Dillon to load them. But, I tend to gravitate towards SS presses for my bottle necked cartridge needs.

Case prep sucks though some progressive presses press out the primer cup crimp. I have a Dillon 550 that doesn't but have loaded 308, 30/06, 300 Weatherby mag, 338 Lapua and 223.

I don't own a progressive but I have used a friends and this pretty much how we did it

With just a basic progressive setup, I would do mostly everything on the single stage except for powder drop and bullet seat. You could prime too if you would like.
