I normally load 168gr AMAX's for ranges up to 600yards and 175 SMK's for longer. The 168gr AMAX's with the right load have proven to be tack drivers in my 700.
I bought some 155gr AMAX's a while back to see how they performed at longer ranges. After struggling with really bad groups at 100 yards, I started to do some due diligence.
What I found using a Hornaday 308 bullet comparator, I was getting variations at the ogive of as much as .020" The really strange thing is the OAL of the bullets were spot on, base to ballistic tip +/- .001 bullet after bullet.
At first I thought maybe Hornaday had lost the formula for making AMAX's. After measuring a full box of 155's and being really disappointed, I dug out a box of 178gr AMAX's that I had bought many months after the I had bought the 155's. The 178's measured all within .001 total a the ogive for the whole box of 100.
When I think back, I remember I was surprised when I opened the box and the bullets were loose, not in a plastic bag. Every box of Hormaday bullets I have ever opened was in a sealed plastic bag. The box had the Hornaday holographic seal on the outside unbroken, so the lack of a plastic bag did not alarm me. Right now, my conclusion is the knock off artists have decoded how to make the Hornaday seal and a Cabela's buyer could not pass a good deal up. I bought these on sale from Cabela's, the 178's I got from Graf and Sons.
I am going to shoot Hornaday an email and see what they think.
