Which 10mm rd for defense?

I use 180gr XTP's over a full load of AA#9, Blue Dot or VV-N105.
If I were in a position where I were using a 10mm for defense against something like a Brown Bear (a last resort kind of thing), I think I would do max load 200gr WFNGC bullets (same bullets Meathead9 is using in his DT's).When asked what qualities he most valued in his generals, Napoleon said, "give me lucky ones."Comment

I based my answer on factory ammo options, and what they actually get at the chrono. I handload 200gr WFNGC's to 1350fps (6" barrel) for my woods carry/hunting load, but I still stick with factory Silver Tips for SD.
DT's 200gr WFNGC chrono'd 1215fps through my 6" barrel, so the 1300fps/4.6" barrel claim on the box is pretty optimistic. The 200gr WFNGC @ 1150fps is still a NASTY round, and that's what that load gets out of a stock G20 barrel.Comment

That is absolutely true, but across the board, DT's 10mm ammo falls 150fps-250fps short of what the box claims. Temperature & elevation will change results, but not by 150+fps. Why does DT fall so short of their velocity claims, while Underwood & Buffalo Bore are pretty dead on with what they advertise? If you look around, you'll find tons of 10mm shooters/handloaders with the exact same reports.
- DT claims a 200gr WFNGC @ 1300fps in a 4.6" barrel.
- 10mm typically gains 50-100fps per inch of barrel.
- That should put that load at a minimum of 1375fps in a 6" barrel.
- Their load only got 1215fps out of my 6" barrel, tested on 3 different days
Like I said, it's still a NASTY round, and if I didn't reload I'd be using them for woods carry. I just wish Underwood had a 200gr WFNGC load.Comment
