lead core .223 and 7.62X39mm ammo

anyone know a good, cheap source for plinking rounds? can be either online or in socal. I know .223 is way up in price now but I was wondering what's the best price out there. my AR is collect dust and I only have milsurp rounds sitting around.

    cheap ammo?

Being in So Orange County, we have few real gun shops here and no cheap ammo (Walmart from time to time) but forget about .223. I find Wolf is always the cheapest no matter how you slice it. And in goes bang every time. I mail order my ammo from Midway or Cabelas. General if you order enough shipping is only slightly more than tax would have been if you bought it local anyway. Gun shows can be relatively cheap unless you factor in admission, parking, gas and time.

mail order is the best bet.

I purchased 500 rounds of this since our outdoor ranges don't allow bi-metal projectiles:

Cheaper Than Dirt! is America's Ultimate Shooting Sports Discounter, and we live up to that title. Expect bulk ammo deals, discounts, gun care accessories and more

Not very cheap but non-magnetic projectile and reloadable.

I would say Wal-Mart and maybe some reloads from Miwall picked up at a local gun show. Tho' the Miwall reloads have recently been getting a lot of negative attention around these parts lately (kinked brass or head separation).

I know that turners had some back in the summer for $6 a box. Is there such a thing as wolf lead core .223? lead core meaning "non-magnetic"..,

The privi partisan is good stuff and is lead core. The only lead core for 7.62x39 I have seen is igman and AIM has it for 7 bucks a box and it is brass cased. I still have a bunch of yugo I bought and the AK's love it. If you find any just remember to clean after you shoot since its corrosive.

                Minor points, but relevant.

Lead Core Ammo: This is ammunition the bullets of which have an inner core of lead, but which may be jacketed with copper, gilding metal or mild steel. The mild steel jackets may be flashed with copper or gilding metal but are still steel jacketed and restricted from use at those SoCal ranges on CDF or BLM land. Steel jacketed ammo will attract a magnet, the definitive test for it. Almost all milsurp ammo is steel jacketed.

Steel Core Ammo: Armor Piercing ammunition with a carbide or tungsten steel core meant to penetrate light vehicular armor. The construction is of a smaller caliber core surrounded by a lead filler then covered by a copper, gilding or mild steel jacket. The ammo usually has a black tip and will also attract a magnetic. It is also restricted at CDF/BLM ranges in SoCal. AP ammo is contraband in California in any caliber for which a pistol is available through common commercial channels. Only distinctly rifle calibers like 30-06 are exempt. (Got this straight from DOJ.)

The upshot here: "Steel core" and "steel jacketed" are confused by most people. Even some LEOs don't use the terms correctly. So, don't describe your 7.62x39 as steel core. Someone overhearing this may decide your ammo is contraband and act accordingly. Many range officers either don't know the difference or don't care, but let them make the mistake, not you.

Old Norinco 7.62x39 ammo circa late 80s early 90s have a metal core. Are they considered armor piercing per CA laws and illegal to have? I remember shooting those through SKS back in the days and use to sell them by the boat load at our old gun shop in soCal. I miss the good ole days.
