XM855LC1 {not for duty use}

#1. I have come across some Federal XM855LC1 marked as {not for duty use} is this ok to shoot for plinking or just junk?

I would be getting this in a FTF cash deal. I have looked at the ammo it looks just fine to me.

#2. Do retailers in store, on-line, or gun-show dealers let you know if you are {not for duty use} ammo?

"All of the various SKU's of Lake City 5.56 XM855 are the same ammo, the only difference is SKU number and/or packaging. Federal did some price increases recently, so they discontinued XM855LCAC1 and replaced it with XM855LC1AC1 so they would not have to honer contract pricing for XM855LCAC1 at the lower prices and rather offer a "new" product at a slightly higher price. The ammo is the exact same, packaging is exact same, "except" for the removal of the "Not for Duty Use" label from the can. That was replaced with a SMQ lot number, which implies a commercial contract load, and also is not certified for duty use. To the best of my knowledge any Lake City ammo with a lot number that starts with SMQ is a commercial classified lot and has not been performance tested. Unless you are in the US military or the military of a country that buys ammo from Lake City you will not be getting any "certified for duty use" ammo made by Lake City. Still you are getting great ammo overall, we sold a large quantity of XM855LCAC1 and never a single performance related complaint
