You know that at long last I was able to chrono my 7.62x25 initial load and some factory 7.62x25. I now really know why this cartridge has fascinated more than a few people.
Used an F-1 plus remote.
I don't have the print out but:
Sellier and Belliot 7.62x25, 85gr FMJ: 1580-1590 range, 477 ft/lbs
Hand-Load in S&B Cases, 110gr Speer Hot Cor Soft Point, 4.2gr red-dot: 1375 avg , cant recall the spread, but it was TIGHT, 462ft/lbs
Temps were a scorching 105F+
The factory beat up the cases and threw them into the next county. My hand loads dropped them off about 6 feet from me. Which was nice.
What got me was the nice clean burn from the often mis-understood red-dot. While I would never use it when seeking a max velocity load it is a good powder and burns better and cleaner in higher pressures. Though between the two the S&B powder burnt so clean that the cartridges didn't even need a cleaning afterwards. Must find out what powder they use.
Now on to what has got me, I want to try different bullets. So much energy in a .30 cal weapon, that is both accurate and reliable. I now need to start investing in some gelatin so that I can run some tests with "alternative bullets". I believe that long and heavy bullets allow for both expansion and tumbling which would render the 7.62x25 a very effective SD round vs the pencil penetrator behavior of FMJ and Steel Core.
On the test list are:
.309-.311 cast lead RN (my own from recovered bullet alloy) expected 105-113grains
Hornady 90gr XTP
.309 speer 110gr Long Profile soft point. (my current bullet choice)
.309 Hornady 110gr Varmint Spire Point profile (this one intrigues me greatly as they say it will feed in a CZ-52 but not in a TT-33)
I also want to seek out a better powder, the red dot is good enough for middling 1400fps but I want something that is better so that I can drive this cartridge faster, safely. I have my eyes set on a goal of 1800 fps with the 90gr and the 110grain bullets up to 1650-1700fps. The destructive power of a 90gr HP at 1800fps would be immense, the 110gr Varmint poly tipped spire bullet at 1700 would be really something to write home about in pistol ballistics. Theory would say that the Varmint bullet would tumble and break up or just explosively fragment on impact.
Then some day, I would love to make a new barrel for .357 sig in a TT or CZ frame.
