Magnetospeed chronograph incoming!

I've got a review sample of the Magnetospeed magnetic chronograph coming in soon. Other folks have already compared their accuracy vs Oehler chronographs and such, so I'm not going to spend time on that. I will however be evaluating it for convenience and such. To me, the HUGE attraction is not having to worry about getting a bright view of the sky (or putting on IR lights) and not having to worry about some jerk using it for a target if I set it downrange.

This also inspired me to get around to updating my Gunwiki overview of chronographs.

What AMAZES me is that the shooting industry is the only one I know of where the prices of the SAME EXACT electronics stay the same or go up. I went through and updated the chronograph models' MSRP lines, and while a couple of them remained the same, most of them went up. The basic Shooting Chrony actually went up from $63.99 to $99.95!

That thing is pretty nice!

I shoot a lot at an indoor range and testing reloads with a regular chrono won’t work... this would be awesome.

I went ahead and bought one today, since they finally had them in stock.

I hope it works well as it will greatly simplify the chrony work at public ranges if it does work well.

If it doesn't work well, it won't be the biggest mistake I have made, even this year...

Actually, it works on anything where you've got available barrel space to clamp it onto (AND where the barrel doesn't move while the weapon is fired), semi or not. A 1911, Sig, etc has a barrel that tilts up as the slide locks back, and the only thing you could clamp it to (the slide) moves when you shoot. A Desert Eagle with the 10" barrel (which sticks out, doesn't tilt, and doesn't move when the gun is fired) would probably work with this design.

Some wheelguns can't fit it,and some can - you probably won't have any luck fitting this to a snub-nose, for instance.

Hmmm I'm interested. Having no use with a handgun with no exposed barrel is a big bummer. But it looks like a light rail mod could be fabricated.

I'll just say that I personally wouldn't spend a lot of time trying to develop one presently...

How does it hold up to repeated heavy muzzle blast?

Any comparisons proving it's accuracy?

$250 is alot of bucks compared to a used F1 at $40. Plus it won't work on a semi auto pistol unless you fabricate something to attach it to the frame. Magnetic sensors have to be really close to the sensed object to work. Would be interested to see if you have have to reposition it after each shot on a rifle.

Actually you could probably hold the mag chrono in a clamp, or vice, and shoot a semi auto over it, but the bullet would have to be close enough to the sensors.

What if you shoot a pure copper, brass or guilding metal homogeneous bullet?

so did anyone get to use it yet? mine delivered today. going to go over it tonight for mount fabrication ideas. i'll get to test it out wednesday. i'll report back.

the though of not having to use a light sensor chrono is so exciting. i currently use an m2 with the IR set up and it's cool but it's still not awesome. not to mention the set up is something i'm really looking forward to bypassing.

but my first impressions on opening it up and checking things out is two thumbs up. it's not impossible to use it with pistol but just looking at it now just for rifle, for the same cost as an m2 rig and not having to set it up, this takes the cake.
