    Help a noob out

Just a couple of questions. What is a quicker setup for measuring powder? It took me forever to load 10 rounds. I'm just using a Lee dipper and a hornady gs-1500 electric scale. Are you suppose to be able to move a bullet by hand once it's loaded? Once I seat the bullet to proper OAL, I can still push it by hand and screw up OAL.

What caliber are you loading? I am going to guess you are doing pistol rounds. Maybe you need to readjust your seating die so it takes the flare out of the case mouth. Run the seating cup up into the die and lower the die body back down. Sometimes I just use a loaded round, back off the cup and lower the die until it touches the case, the screw the cup back down until it touches the bullet. That gets you pretty close.
As for speeding up the process, you might want to get a powder hopper and a trickler.

For dispensing powder you need to get a powder measure. Lee makes one for like $20 I think. I'm on my iPad so can't post random pics from the Internet but here's one of mine. It's made by RCBS and costs around $80 IIRC. I have a Lee one as well and it works great.

The bullet should not be moving. Make sure you have your sizing die down low enough. Make sure you're sizing the entire case.
Also make sure that you are completely taking out all of the bell you made with the expanding die.
Lastly make sure the bullets you're using aren't under sized.

It's most likely not the bullets. You're probably doing something wrong.

      Hope this helps. Good luck.

        1. RCBS Uniflow or similar powder measure.
        2. No, it shouldn't be that loose.

Yeah, I came back to tell him he could pick up a Lee for around 20 bucks, but you already had that one covered too!

Proper neck tension will fix the bullet moving after it is loaded. You get that proper neck tension with the sizing die. Screw the sizing die down so it is the width of a piece of paper off the shellholder when the ram is all the way up.

After you have adjusted your sizing die as described above, if the bullet will still move then you either have a sizing die that is too loose for the brass and bullets you are using, or the brass is too thin or the bullet is too small a diameter, but likely setting up the sizing die fixed the problem.

A Lee Perfect Powder Measure is inexpensive and will depense amazingly accurate amounts of pistol powder.

              Good luck, have fun.

Thanks for all the advice. I am loading 9mm. I'll try messing with the dies and see how it goes. I'm going to pick up one of these lee perfect powder measures.

What press are you using? If you are using the LEE CLASSIC LOADER, it works great for lead bullets but usually leaves the brass a little oversized for most jacketed bullets. Post more info on your reloading set up.

I'm using the Lee Single stage Reloader press and dies.

One option for handgun loading and your press would be to get a Lee Auto Disk Pro, you can then drop the powder automatically while belling the case. The Perfect Powder Measure will work great as well, you just have to drop separately and funnel the powder in. The Perfect Powder Measure will work for rifle loading as well, so it won't be wasted money of you get it then move to an AD Pro.

Go with the Hornady LnL Powder measure . Much like the Uniflow but better.
