    powder for 308?

My buddy is looking for a powder for 308..... The gun is a Socom 16. He just wants to make target loads, preferably a 150gr bullet. The rounds will be made on a Dillon 650... So most importantly, a powder that meters great, is clean, and accurate.

    Thanks

IMR 3031, there was a thread ( I don't remember where ) about someones quest to achieve accuracy with his SOCOM, he ended up using IMR 3031.

I think it was at ....http://m14forum.com/forums.php ... in ammunition or accuracy forums.

For my semi auto plinking I use surplus WC846 from Hi Tech cheap meters great. Surplus powders always start low and work up.
          For bolt action accuracy RE15.

Oh boy everyone has a different answer..... Maybe I'll be more specific. I'm looking for a powder that mainly meters VERY consistent, clean, and accurate enough for target 150 loads. My buddy doesn't care about cost.... So any more recommendations (hopefully multiple people with the same powder)....

im using win 748 in my 223 and 308 loads.....excellent metering in my rcbs uniflo....have dime size groups in both cals....i do use cci mag primers as a couple of my load books recommend for 748....do start low though-most accurate loads for me are 5 to 10% under max....cheers...

BL-C2 or Surplus 846. I load 308 for my bolt gun on a 550 sometimes using BL-C2 and get excellent groups using the starting load. 748 also meters excellent.

                  TAC....

5 shots - 200 yards in bad mirage at Burro at far right, causing me to fling one high.

800 - 900 and 1000 yard score card with same load...Disclaimer, NRA 1000 yard standard slow fire prone target, but I used a stock Tikka Tactical 308 with a muzzle brake and a Nightforce BR scope 8 x 32 x 56 at 22 setting. Hence, I was out of class and should have been using a F class target, but I wasn't shooting for record as I had the muzzle brake.

TAC meters well and shoots well, it has anti fouling additives, and is not too temperature sensitive...yes, the herd loves Varget, but Varget meters like crap on a dillon, or lee, or RCBS, or Hornandy...Show me someone who gets consistant metering with Varget and I will show you someone who has no idea on how to read a scale.

BL-C(2), it was designed for the military 7.62X51.

Any of the double based ball powders will do well, Tac, H-335,BLC-2, W-748, CFE-223, 2230, 2460 and 2520 will all meter well, but most are temperature sensitive.

In the single based powders, Benchmark, 8208 XBR, H-4895 and AR-Comp will meter well and they will be less temperature sensitive. The old IMR powders such as 3031,4895 and 4064 and 4320 are very good 308 Win. powders, but they suck big time in a powder hopper. IMR 4320 is the only one that is short grained and will meter well, but is at the limit of the slow side for gas gun use.

If you want to go on the cheap, The surplus powders WC-844 and WC-846 work very well. They are double based ball powders. WC-844 is similar to H-335 and WC-846 is similar to BLC-2. WC-846 is the powder the Government uses in M-80 ball ammo.

I've been using Benchmark, 8208 XBR and AR-Comp lately in the 308 Win. and have been very pleased with them.

There is an array of suitable powders for what you are looking for. It's up to personal choice. I like IMR 8208 XBR, it's short grained, meters great and it's much less temperature sensitive than the ball powders. It also works great with bullet weights up to 175 grains.

I use the IMR XBR 8208 in my 223 and 308 and it meters well for my 223 in my dillon but not well in my 308 dillon. I just use a Seperate powder measure for the 308 and it is dead on accurate.

The beauty of the .308 is that it is not picky about powder, if you load progressive you can't beat BL-C2 with 147 or 150 grain bullets.
If you want to be nice to the rifle, stick with what it was designed to function with which is IMR 4895. 41.5gr under either a 168gr Sierra or 42gr under a 150 or 155 will shoot sub MOA out of my M1A walnut NM.
H 4895 will interchange but the listed max stops 2 grains lower.
With a 16" barrel, anything slower than 4895 is a waste of time.

IMR 4895. Very important that you use a hard primer, CCI#34 is the best. If you don't use a hard primer and make very sure it's seated properly, you can get a slamfire. This could result in a destroyed rifle and a destroyed MIAMI dude.
