source for good (cheap) 45/70 bullets
In any type of fight, & especially gun fights, there are no winners ..... just varying degrees of losers. The only fight you win is the one you never get into.

If you'll go out to Sac Valley this saturday Feb 2, the black powder guys are shooting their silhouette match. A lot of them are shooting some type of 45/xxx.
Ask any of them. Tom Lyon in particular. Tell him Rob Thomas told you to ask him. Really good guys, and Tom orders all the reloading supplies for sale at the range.Rob Thomas - Match Director NCPPRC Tactical Long Range Match

If you make it to the Bay Area, I have Bear Creek moly coated bullets for that caliber in stock.Comment

The Remington 405FP are always pretty cheap. I am buying and doing casting. It seems the cast ammo runs really well but the 405 with 55gr of 4895H runs well also. Midway was selling the Remington with the Midway name on it for pretty cheap last time I bought rounds.Comment

Loading .45-70 for smokeless and black powder are two completely different animals. Alloys, lube and suitable bullets are different although there are probably some common areas. Buffalo Arms probably has everything you would need or want for blackpowder and some smokeless stuff. Midway has a bias towards smokeless with a pretty good blackpowder selection also. I remember Remington or Winchester making a lead 405gr bullet, which would probably make an inexpensive smokeless load, although I can't seem to find any reference to it.Comment

I think this is was a typo; the above-mentioned bullets are 97/500. I was hoping they where $77 meaning the lead surcharge had been lowered.Comment

I use a lot of the Oregon Trail Laser Cast 350g FN. Good bullet at 20 cents a pop. The Rainier plated 350g FN is working out OK for me as well. The Remington 405 and 300 are good as long as you don't push 'em over 1800fps or so. I load the Hornady 300g HP up to 1925 fps for deer and soft skinned stuff. The Speer 300g HP is a real underrated bullet, premium performance at a moderate price for all game weights. I use Rx7 to run it right at 2000fps. The Speer 400g bullet is good as well, but soft like the Remington 405.
Those are the standard things I look for in my 1895G. I cycle through:
Graf & Sons
Midway USA
Lock, Stock and Barrel
Midsouth Shooters
And price shop for the sales. I've had good experiences with all of them in the last few months.Comment
