    Built a new bench!!

I really prefer the working height of a standard office table, but the one i have is so flimsy ive been wanting to build a proper workbench for some time now.

Decided to just do it on Sunday, i spent about 20 minutes collecting my thoughts and drawing out dimensions for how much wood i would need, and decided i would have the guys at home depot make the cuts for me.

I called up a friend and we hit home depot for the materials:

This is my first large wood project, so i didnt know that 2x4's are actually 1 1/2 x 4's so once i got ready to have them cut, all my measurements were off. I did a little offhand calculation and had them cut away. I was off by a little bit, but thats what i get for not being prepared.

The actual project took a few hours, and would have gone faster if my drill hadnt constantly been running out of battery.

I decided against using particle board or a solid core door for the top for aesthetic reasons, so i had some 12' lengths of 2x12 cut into slats that would serve as the top.

I actually intended to lay another layer of slats going the other way to have a 4" thick top but its not necessary. I attached a press and ran some .300 winmag into a sizing die and there was absolutley no movement. This thing weighs a ton and is sturdy as all hell.

Since i miffed the measurements i have enough wood left over to build another workbench

All i have left to do is a bit of sanding and some sealer or a stain, pretty happy with how it came out.

Wow, this turned out so much better than my first woodworking setup which was a much smaller reload bench. I need to find a CalGunner to make me a replacement in a few months, hahah

Very nice, you could always use the extra wood for a shelf

Looks like a really solid bench. Excellent job.

( but measure the 2x4s again before your next project )

One more thing. If your bench sways a little, a cross brace or two will fix it.

Looks great, Mark! I need to plan my mini-work/reloading bench out.

You can work on a Sherman tank on that table

What you can do to protect the table top is to use some 1/2" CD or AC plywood depending on how nice you want it. I made up a bench similar, but with a bit beefier support about 20 years ago.. total weight with shelves is in the 300# range. I used 4"x4" Doug Fir framing, 2" thick Doug fir bench tops, with 1/2" CD plywood as a benchtop protector. I used Pine for the cabinets. It currently has a small drill press on the right side, an RCBS Rockchucker about mid bench, and a Dillon 650 mounted on the left side. It has a 2 tier work surface. I have the presses on the lower tier, and the drill press and storage on the 2nd tier, with shelving above and to the left of the drill press.

                        Hey Dark Mod,
Very nice bench! I'm looking to build something simular. Can you tell me the total cost of the materials used? Thanks.

Came out to just over $100 with the screws and everything. I need to buy a belt sander though, so that figure should rise by about $50

Get a belt sander from Harbor Freight... there is no need to spend more than you need to on a tool you wont use much!
