Diff between 308 Win and 7.62x51?

Is there any difference between the rounds? Are they interchangeable?

.308 is hotter than 7.62 x 51. Generally interchangeable (I've heard stories about .308 not functioning properly in older guns on the internet but nothing sustantiated).
SAAmi does not list it as a problematic interchange.

Having said that, be forewarned that some thirld world countries' surplus 7.62 ammo is dangerous (i. e. certain years of Indian 7.62), because of poor quality control.
