which .223 ammo is a better deal?

I've been looking at ammo online for a few days, and I want to pick up a case of ammo ASAP. Being new to buying my own guns and ammunition, I'm considering the following for my 1:9 16" stag upper:

    Black Hills "seconds" 55gr FMJ from a local gunshop $20/50rds (1000 rds=$400+tax?)

    Lake City 55gr XM193 from Ammoman.com (1000 rds=$450)

    Bosnian-made Igman 55gr M193 also from Ammoman (1000 rds=$389)

I think Ammoman was cheaper than cheaperthandirt...

The goal of buying 1000 rounds is to have enough on hand for self-defense in-case SHTF before I shoot it all off. Reliability is paramount, therefore I am not considering Wolf as a viable option for this purchase (perhaps the brass cased Wolf-gold on the next buy).

suggestions or good deals I can hit up locally? (south bay)

if you want anything cheaper than that, you have to buy either wolf ammo, or reloads

    or you could start reloading

Depending what your shooting it through, I have good luck with wolf through my mini 14. The black hills blue box is great stuff as well. Way better than wolf, but I can get wolf for around 22cents a pop vs 40cent for BH. The extra time cleaning is worth it. And any of the so called problems with wolf are paid off just going through one case.

+1 on the B.H. blue box. IMO, they're as good as handloads of the highest caliber (quality), and are better than 99.9% of any factory stuff out there. You just can't beat B.H.......if you can find it!! (I hoarded 2 cases of the stuff about 3 years ago ($14.99/50), and only take "some" of it out on occasion. Plus, you're getting a premium bullet to boot! (Hornady V-MAX) Once you start handloading, you'll only be buying bullets/primers/powder anyway, and you will NEVER pay those ridiculous $$$ for factory stuff again. I stay away from Wolf (for AR work) like cats from water!

What about buying in bulk from Wally world? They have Rem UMC (or WWB, I'm not sure; they are always out when I want some) for 7.57/20, which works out to around $325+tax per 1000.

Two different stores told me that you can order large batches through the Department Manager

I bought a bunch of that for $57 per battle back a few months ago.
Seems to be good blasting ammo.

I really like BH's Blue Box ammo.

Who knows, you may be able to deal a bit with the gun shop on the OTD price of the ammo.

I've been shooting the Prvi Partizan M193 55 gr, and it's been good. Reliable, as accurate as any M193 style ammo (2 moa), and reasonably priced by today's standards. Lots of good feedback on it at the arfcom ammo forum.

Their other offerings - 62 gr and 75 gr match - also are getting good reviews. I just ordered 1k of the 62 gr and 200 of the 75 gr yesterday.

Best prices so far are at http://wideners.com/itemview.cfm?dir=18|725, though www.ammotogo.com and aimsurplus are pretty close too. I went with Wideners because they had the 62 gr and 75 gr, and most places are only carrying the 55 gr.

I decided against the ammotogo reloads, since the PP was just a few bucks more.

Good info so far guys, I'm impressed.

What about 'magtech' ammo? It's like a gray box with blue writing, the shells are loose (no plastic thingy) and it's also $20/50rds.

$309 for a case of ammo sounds pretty flippin' sweet though!

Any good local buys that I could pick up on my way to a range?

I just got 500 rounds to test the stuff out - it comes loose packed by 100's in individual boxes, shiny brass and bullets are tight.

Wolf shoots great in my AR, very accurate - but very dirty. I would have no reservations about storing up some, I have never had a failure of any type with it.
