If the S actually does HTF a likely affable and respectful young man and his platoon will be around very soon after to collect your various weapons and ammo. Don't get mad if he can't surpress a laugh when you ask about your 2nd Ammendment rights... I guess that about covers the strategic part.
I probably have about 10K handgun rounds loaded and enough components for another 50K. I have a few thousand rifle rounds loaded and enough components for a few thousand more. Maybe 6K shot shells of various flavors. Only a few thousand .22LR/M, I just don't shoot 22's much anymore.
The reason I have all this stuff is I will use it.
I believe Ben Bernanke is trying his hardest to induce inflation (it is the only way out our debt issues, because like Greece, Spain, Italy and Argentina before them, we are not going to pay it back). If Ben is successful anything you buy today is going to seem really cheap in no time at all. If Ben is unsuccessful, the Great Depression won't be called that anymore. When asked what qualities he most valued in his generals, Napoleon said, "give me lucky ones."Comment

my thoughts are a little different on quantity I don't see a number but I see an amount of time
For common easy to find calibers I want to have enough loaded ammo for a year and enough reloading components for a back up.
I shoot about 500 rounds a month of 45ACP, I have 6000 rounds stashed away
I shoot about 100 rounds a month of 12 gauge, 1200 stashed away
For rare or hard to find calibers I want to have enough loaded ammo or components to last the lifetime of the firearm, if I can't get ammunition it is just an expensive magnet holder.
22LR is an exception, 10,000 rounds
Also something people don't look at when they think of ammo is mags you need plenty of mags to hold and cycle that ammo.I will share my opinion and my load data, BUT I am just a guy with too many cigars and too many guns. Whatever I say is probably wrong.Comment

I wouldn't put it past them to try. Remember the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
The most important things we as shooters can do are
1.) vote our conscience, and
2.) get set up to roll our own.

Mine is similar to others I've seen posted, but I'm "extra heavy" on 22LR. Simply because I don't reload it and I know my circumstances....I have untrained individuals in my family that will need to be trained should our firearms ever be "needed" and I also keep 22 variant rifles and pistols (or kits) available to help with the training. So I'm at about 20k maybe 25k in 22LR. Plus I shoot it a ton, probably 3k a year - sometimes more.Comment

A practice that I started a number of years ago and still do to this day is to buy a box of ammo every time I go to Walmart. Just one box. I stash it in my safe and keep it there. Even though I load and shoot at least 10-12k per year, it's nice to have that untouched stash in case things suddenly become unavailable. You'd be surprised at how you can accumulate a decent emergency pile of ammo without disrupting your cash flow.
I also try to keep enough primers and powder on hand to last me through another election year fiasco. I try to buy them when I see good deals.Comment

I think it's more the slightly dillusional idea that someone will record your post, figure out where you live, then after a SHTF situation comes up, travel to your house and steal it all
(And how is the military going to take your ammo when they don't know how much you have or where it is?
)
What I can see happening is you offing an intruder, then his family's defense lawyer dredges up your post as evidence against you about how you're obviously a bad egg with all that ammo...Last edited by kb58; 07-25-2012, 11:17 AM.Comment
