I just started playing with the new Lee Challenger press and Redding Die. I cleaned the brass, popped a bushing in the die, adjusted things according to the book, but it's just not as smooth as I was expecting it to be. I lube each casing before I seat it. Some go in and come out as smooth as silk, and others seem to hit a little bump at first (as if the deprimer rod is getting hung up) and then stuck a little again towards the butt of the shell. They're all once fired Federal from the FGMM cartridges. Is that just the way it is or maybe I have something set not quite right? Once in a while I need to give the lever a good jerk to pull the casing back out again too.

What you're running into sounds normal (some cases need to be resized more than others), but without being there, it's hard to be sure.
In case you don't already have a kit, you may want to gather the parts needed in case you end up with a broken case in your resizing die.
I recently had a broken .223 case in my die, sheared the rim right off. I used the method below to easily extract the case.

It sounds like the expander ball is dragging in the case neck. Powder residue and carbon will cause that problem. If you lube the case necks inside, the problem should go away. Any lube will work but you must remember to remove all of the lube before loading to prevent powder contamination.Last edited by Dutch Henry; 07-15-2012, 10:29 PM.Comment

Good stuff. Thanks all. Will try to find a complete set of steps -- the info seems to be in bits and pieces on the internet.Comment
