    Question on a 7.62X54R

Alright I'm going to go shooting soon with my first guns, which happen to be Finnish M39 Mosin Nagants. I was planning to go to the Burro Canyon firing range, but I've been having trouble finding ammo that works with their rules. As it is dry season use of bimetal and steel core bullets are banned. I just bought 440 rounds of soft lead core bullets with magnetic jackets, would they be allowed?

check the projectile with a magnet. The material the case is made up of is not the concern.

Magnetic jackets??? No go @ burro or Lytle creek. The Yugoslav surplus is non magnetic if you can find some.

I don't think you can use this at any of the So. Cal ranges. I have used the following at Angeles Range. It is picey at $.80 per round but less than the Hornedy stuff.

Ugh, was hoping to avoid commercial ammo due to the price. As I'm college bound and on summer break, my budget is rather limited. Already spent $960 on my two M39s and 15 bucks a box a 20 is just out of my range right now.

Eh, my local Big5 sells 7.62X54R from the manufacturer MFS its 7.62X54R FMJ 174gr zinc plated steel cases. Anyone know what the core is? I know its copper plated from looking at it.

In my defense M39s are worth that price. Unlike the 1891-30s the Finnish M39s are of higher quality. They usually will out shoot a 91-30 at any distance. And besides one of them was of a rare quality.

Oh I looked at that place already, and jesus its expensive. 30 bucks per person per 2 hours! Burro canyon is $10 for the whole day. And besides I live in Yorba Linda so that place is kind a far for me. Well far for the price I should say.

If the price you paid is fine with you then you are good to go, but don't try to justify it to somebody else who has their own opinion of a good price or else you may get some bad news from others as well.

Buy yourself a LEE CLASSIC LOADER ( $30.00 shipped ) in 7.62X54r and then a few boxes of Brass cased commercial ammo or just some brass, some powder, primers, bullets and you are good to go for reloading your M39.

What you also can do is pull the projo and just replace it with a non mag projo. I have done this lots of times and sell the ammo. It's more then surplus but cheaper then factory.

Just make sure you know the weight of the projo your pulling and you put the same weight back in.
