What's the debate? I will clean my primer pockets the day I trim the meplat and check jacket thickness.

I don't know if it makes a difference... but it only takes a second to clean the pockets. I use the end of an RCBS pocket cleaner. I put it in the tip of my drill and cinch it down. I use my drill for pretty much everything.

After polishing the cases, I push the tip of a small flat jeweler's screwdriver into the flashole of each case to clear any media and carbon debris that may be present. A quick, circular motion around the bottom of the primer pocket removes any residue that might prevent a primer from seating fully.

Jeweler's screwdriver sets are cheap, the tips are hardened and they work well for me.

Not the only way, just another way.

Clean primer pockets don't make a rats azz difference in 99% of the reloading you will ever do. Even for precision rifle loading you will get a lot more downrange result by doing things like flash hole uniforming, trimming, neck shaving and other brass prep steps than you will by cleaning the primer pockets.

It's all about full service my friends! You should always clean the primer pockets. When you take a shower do you wash your feet?

Primer pocket cleaning is a waste of time, it's been proven over and over.

I deprime (rifle brass) before I tumble. I tumble in SS media so it comes out clean. When I use to tumble in walnut media, it would clean some but not all of the crud in the primer pockets. I do not necessarily clean pistol brass primer pockets.

                      Stainless media. Cleans it all.
I will share my opinion and my load data, BUT I am just a guy with too many cigars and too many guns. Whatever I say is probably wrong.

Not necessary to produce sub MOA rifle rounds. If you are a benchrest shooter or just have OCD, then yeah.
