which press should i get?

ive narrowed my choices down to two presses. i know nothing about reloading, but thats going to change. i own a 9, 40, 45, 556 and 762x39 and id rather spend my money on more firearms than bullets. should i get the lee classic turret or the lee pro 1000 and why?

Not a big price difference I would go with the Lee Pro 1000. Why? It will make reloading easier.

I would first ask myself, honestly!, how many rounds a month do I plan on loading?? That will decide on a single stage or progressive.. Single stage, I would get a RCBS Rock Chucker, that will handle anything you want to load except 50BMG. Progressive, I am very happy with my new Dillon 550B, was easy to set up and get down to loading!! I've heard to many not so good things on the Lee pro 1000, I'm not saying they are bad, just not the quality of a Dillon when it comes to progressive. Then again, it's like anything else, how much you wanna spend???

the thing is, im on a budget. im willing to spend a little more on a press, but what about dies and other accs? i was checking out the rock chucker and that looked pretty good until i seen the prices of their dies and stuff. dillon was just plain expensive, which is why i chose to go with lee. i go thru about 400 rounds a month of various cal. i want something that wont break the bank.

I have both, for your first get the turret perss. Even then, I am not too fond of my pro 1000. It has a lot of plastic parts and they wear out and break easy. If you leave it configured for 1 round, it's okay, but changing to different cals is a PITA.

Get a single stage press from RCBS over a Lee 1000. Those things SUCK.

One press? Lee Classic Turret. Beefy and big enough for most anything. Can be used as a single or multi station. Mounts all dies including a powder measure. Remove the indexing rod and use it manually with little or no sacrifice in speed while increasing versatility. Get at least one rotor for each caliber.

Don't mess with a progressive unless you shoot more than 2500 rounds a month in several calibers. Setup with these over several calibers and loads is "interesting." In any case, really don't mess with a Pro 1000.

It really doesn't hurt to start with a single stage. You'll use it later on for special tasks after moving up to a turret, and it teaches the fundamentals without getting all tangled up in turret/progressive logisitics. I think Lee Classic or RCBS are good juju.

Lee dies are cheap, but good. RCBS are more expensive but good and have a bullet proof warranty. Lee gives ya two years. RCBS warranties can be invoked by your executors.

You can use any brand die in any standard press threaded for 7/8 x 14. I have the classic cast turret and love it. You can take out the index rod and run it as a single stage press which is great for starting out. My friend has the 1000 and its a pain to set up even for people that have been doing it for years.

Oh, and neved even consider Dillon SDB. Unlike other Dillons, it's a totall crap and waste of money.

I gotta give RCBS some props here. I some how :::lost::: the decapping pin on my 45acp die. I was loading one day, and then the next day I went to use it, it was gone Some how just ran away. I called up RCBS and explained that I some how lost it, and wanted to order a new one. Very nice lady on the phone actually argued with me that I didn't need to pay for it. Nothing was their fault, I simply somehow managed to lose the part, and she shipped me about a dozen pins and the little retainer nipple thing for FREE. I couldn't believe it. I even offered to at least pay shipping and she said NO DEAL! So next time I need dies, it's definately going to be through them. Plus, they're a CA company

Lee stuff is not for the impatient. It's designed to be clever, cheap and useful. However, it takes a little patience to "get it right," and ya hafta expect to tinker with it once in a while.
