Recipe for 55 Grain Polymer tipped 3240fps

I am trying to find a recipe for a 55 grain Hornady polymer tipped going as fast as 3240 fps. I'm trying to match my Nikon scope (M223) BCD which uses this velocity.

It is not that important to exactly match the velocity a scope says it's calibrated for. At out to 300 yards there will be no difference at all with up to 100fps variance. Only at 400+ will any difference (if at all) be seen.

That said, 3240 is a danged hot load for 55gr even in a 20" bbl AR. I would be careful trying to get to that point. If you are loading for a shorter barrel than 20" I would not suggest trying to get to that point!

3150-3175 is a lot better max velocity range to go for safely, especially in a short bbl.

AA2320, AA2520 and WW748 will all work well under a 55gr. FYI, 27.5gr WW748 pushes 55gr at about 3150-3175 in my 20" bbl's. It's also near max (primers are just starting to flow above that charge weight).

As an example, my ACOG (JP reticle in TA-01) is calibrated for the SMK 77gr at 2750fps. I run SMK 77's downrange at 2675fps and the reticle calibration is still on the money out past 600 yards.

OK..stupid question....where do you shoot around here that can go 600 yards?
Some guys like their powder like their women, hot, cheap, dirty, that would be TiteGroup. -CocoBolo

          20" Krieger + 55 grain Blitzking + 27.5 grains of Varget = 3150 fps

The case is FULL to the top with that much powder, so a faster powder or a longer barrel will be required to reach 3240 fps.

55gr nosler in a 22-250 Ackley Improved yields just over 3800FPS with my loads. Its like shooting a laser. I use an MOA calculator and click accordingly.

Sacramento, Red Bluff, Reno, Coalinga, and Fresno all have 600 yards and beyond...

if his rifle has a long throat, he might get the velocity he's looking for.

Hodgdon's load data page has a bunch of loads over your desired speed. Were I you, not knowing (or caring) what their test barrel was, I'd pick the top 2 or 3 powders, work up your load as best you can, and chrono the speeds to see if you can't get what you are looking for.

I use a 55 Nosler ballistic tip with 26 gn of AA2460. Not sure of the velocity though. Its my long range load.

With a 20" barrel, you might get there with CFE223. It's giving me significantly higher velocities than 748. Out of a 16" barrel I don't think you'll get there.

ejhc11, Yes, I am aware of the Spot On software on the Nikon site. For the BCD to work as advertised, as each circle is at 100 yard increments (100, 200, 300, 400 ,500 and 600 yards). Otherwise I can't remember 101, 204, 312, 425, 556, 640 yards for each of the BCD in the retical, if the speed is not 3240fps.
