    Winchester 30-06 brass sucks

Bought some brand new Winchester 30-06 brass at cabelas, and I can't get the primers to seat to the same depth!

Most are ok, but 1 in 10 are high and cant be pressed further in. All my other brass loads fine, this stuff is TERRIBLE.

I am so frustrated right now. I guess I'll complain to them...am I the only one with this problem?

Did you try uniforming or reeming the primer pockets?

I've never done that before with new brass, am I supposed to?

Brass is a manufactured item, subject to tolerances and machinery malfunction-
Perhaps you just got a bad batch -
you don'r mention your loading tolerances or procedure - perhaps your dillon needs an adjustment.

All I load in 30-06 and 30-30 is Winchester brass. Admittedly I only have about 300 rounds of each but I have never seen that issue. I use CCI large rifle primers.

This isn't the first report of funny rifle brass from Winchester that I've read recently.

According to the above link, Winchester is outsourcing the production of some of their brass to Sellier & Bellot, whose .38 Special brass I can confirm has extra-tight primer pockets.

I have had a tough time priming my Winchester 30-06 brass. I am new to re-loading and have re-loaded the Greek HXP brass with no issues. I never put two and two together but come to think of it the Winchester does suck.
I will pay close attention next time. I have a batch ready to load right now and I will seperate the HXP from the Winchester and note the difference.

The brass is ok but you do need to uniform the primer pocket a bit. I have had that issue with Winchester 7mm mag brass, 30-06 and .303. Oddly enough I have some Winchester 6.5x55 and 260 Remington brass that does not have that issue. I've never had that issue with WW or WCC mil spec ammo, just the commercial stuff.

Winchester is the worst quality brass I have ever worked with. The flash holes on the batch of commercial .223 I had weren't even round, or close to centered.

PMC is my least favorite for the same reasons plus its hard, neck tension can be extreme by the second firing.

Hmmm, just the opposite for me. PMC is easy to size, Hornady is the hardest. No trouble seating primers with either. Fiocchi on the other hand is easy to size but the primer pocket is loose after 2 firings.

I don't have any issues with Winchester brass. However, I always use a Hornady primer pocket uniformer when I prep brass for my Garand or M1A to prevent high primers or other issues.
