    Need suggestions reloading 270win

I just traded one of my ARs for a bolt rifle in 270 win. I already have a good amount of brass on the way, but I also have a few boxes factory rounds for it too, so I am not in a huge rush to start loading for it. I am looking for suggestions on a good powder for target shooting as well as a place to source bullets at a reasonable price, don't really need anything fancy or over the top since the only thing I plan on shooting at for now is paper.

Many shooters follow the recipes of Jack O'Conner, who favored H4831, IMR 4064 and IMR 4350.

I had very good luck with IMR 4350 and Sierra 130 grain bullets.

Mag pro and 130 to150g. Bullets gets good velocity out of 270 win. Wideners has pulled bullets midway has blemished on sale now

The 270 Winchester likes the slower powders to get top velocities. If you haven't bought any powder yet, I'd try Hodgdon H-4350 and / or H-4831. These two powders will give you top velocities with 130 and 150 grain bullet weights. They also are Hodgdon's "Extreme" powders which are less sensitive to temperature changes than the majority of other powders on the market.

They don't cost more than their IMR counterparts. I've been loading for the 270 since the 1970's.

Take a look at Hodgdon's reloading site, this will give you a good idea of which powders give top velocities. They list powders in their own line along with IMR and Winchester powders.

I absolutely love the 270 Win and have loaded a LOT of rounds for accuracy. I have tried countless combos of powders and bullets. I have settled on:

135gr Sierra MatchKings on top of VV N-560 powder.

As for a bullet source, I use grafs.com . They're probably not the absolute cheapest supplier, but good enough for gov't work.

I also really like the SMK 135 grainers for .270, great downrange performance in the wind. Not cheap, but the best .270 non-hunting bullet I have found for that caliber.

I have used Varget to good result in .270 but am using AA2700 nowadays because of how well it meters compared to Varget.

I've had best luck with 150 grain bullets in the wind. I use IMR 4350 but I think H4831 makes a short cut witch might make it easier for you to meter. I like the 135gn matchkings but have had the same results with these: http://www.shop.rmrbullets.com/produ...&categoryId=18

Thanks for the suggestions. I still have to make a decision on bullets. Will probably buy a few different boxes and see what I like best. Will probably grab a pound of h4831 and a pound of IMR 4350 and try a few loads with each. I'm not too worried about consistent metering because I am extremely anal when I reload and individually weigh every powder charge. Benefits of not reloading in large volumes at the moment. I've got 80 pieces of brass resized and trimmed to length, just waiting to hit the shop I buy my reloading supplies from on the 7th to get the powder and bullets I need.

Dont hear much talk about the good ol .270 Winnie here much but I got to chime in when I see it. This is the best load I found in my rifle after trying many different combinations over the years for my Ruger M-77.

130 grain Nosler Ballistic tip bullet
                  55.0 grains of IMR4831 powder
                  Winchester L.R primers
This load is super clean and accurate with me.

Now I set my C.O.L to 3.323 and that gives me 15 thousands free bore. Your rifle will differ so work on that to find the right free bore that your rifle will like. Congrats on getting a nice caliber..

Good advice. I prefer heavier bullets (150grn) and H4831.

If you are punching paper 130 is they way to go but for hunting I like a heavier bullet.

Picked up a box of CCI LR primers along with some IMR 4831 and 150gr Hornady SST bullets. Loaded 10 of them up and hitting the range in the morning. I'll see how they do.

The SST bullets are probably a bit much for punching paper but my choices were pretty limited in the shop.

I ended up loading 10 rounds to go to the range with. 150gr SST bullet, 52.0gr of IMR 4831 and a CCI 200 primer. Shot out of a Mossberg 100 ATR with the factory 3-9x scope I managed to do a 3 shot 1.5" group at 100 yards. Extremely happy with the results. Thanks again for all the suggestions.

Awsome! Good choice in powder IMHO. You can play around with the free bore with that rifle and see what it likes by seating your bullets from about 10 to 30 thousands off the lands to see if you can shrink your groups down. Your group aint that bad though with a stock sporting rifle...

It's better than I expected, since most reviews I have read on my rifle have people claiming 2MOA accuracy out of it, and I have very little experience with shooting past 50 yards. I loaded another box today of the same load I shot with this weekend. I want to go back out and see if I can shrink the groups down/improve the guy pulling the trigger a bit, before messing with the load.
