How to safely use Brasso to recharge walnut/corncob media

Well, both the walnut and corncob media (I use both, one in each tumbler) started losing some effectiveness a while back. Didn't have any NuFinish handy, but I did have some Brasso. Of course, I'd read the warnings about the ammonia in Brasso making the brass in the shells more brittle.

Turns out there's a safe way to do this.

Take your typical vibratory tumbler, say a Frankford Arsenal model, with the cleaning medium in it. Turn it on and let the medium tumble. From the standard-sized Brasso container (I think it's about 8 ounces), squeeze about a third of the bottle's contents kinda-sorta gradually into the medium. It'll look clumpy at first, but it'll distribute pretty evenly in about 10 minutes.

Do not put the lid on the tumbler yet. Let it tumble overnight, preferably outside. You can also let it run during the day while you're at work. This will evaporate the ammonia. Now, you can safely tumble your brass in it, and it'll look great afterwards and last as long as if you used NuFinish.

    Hopefully this helps someone.

Not to forum-jump, but most only reload brass 6 times-ish, so:

"I use Brasso all the time and have been using it for over 10 years. I have not seen any problems with it so far. I only use a small amount in a large tumbler so I'm sure it is not hurting the brass. The brass comes out looking real good and shiny when its done."

"I have been using Brasso in my tumbler for over 20 years and no problems of any kind. Makes them shine good to."

Just what I found in my research on the subject.

Or... just use Nu Finish & not worry about it.

Plenty of old timers will say "I've used Brasso for years blah blah blah." Maybe so, but we have ammonia free stuff nowadays that works just as well or better.

      EDIT: 86D beatme to it.
