IMR 3031 in a Hornady LNL AP

Okay guys need some help! First time loading 30-30 on a Hornady LNL AP. I'm using IMR 3031, this stuff does not meter good at all and it's jamming up the powder drop! If u push with too much force I'm Smashing the brass. I empty the powder measure and the powder drop works fine. The only thing I can think of is is the powder drop doesn't like IMR 3031. I've hear good things about this powder and the 30-30, but not sure the Hornady AP likes it.

You will find most powder hoppers do not like the long, tubular stick powders and will not give consistent drops.

I use IMR 3031 in 308 Winchester for 155 grain long range loads. I have to hand measure each charge.

I don't load for the 30-30, but looking at the data, IMR 3031 isn't the most efficient powder.

If I were starting to load for the 30-30, I would be looking at Hodgdon's data.

    http://data.hodgdon.com/cartridge_load.asp for the 30-30.

There are several good powders for the 30-30 that will drop consistent in your progressive, these will be the ball powders (H-335, BLC-2, LVR, 748, CFE-223) and the short grained powders (IMR 8208XBR, Benchmark, H-4895).

Hodgdon's new Leverevolution powder shows the highest velocities with most bullet weights. I would give that a try or IMR's 8208XBR.

If you want to use the IMR 3031, you will need to hand throw each charge to be consistent.

I don't use the long tubular powders in cartridges that other short grain or ball powders will work efficiently in. In the belted magnums and some other cartridges where you have to use the slower burning powders, sometimes you have to use the long, tubular powders.

For the 30-30, there's other powder options out there.
