    Need help with weatherby reloading.

Just got some more brass from my father in law to load for his 7mm weatherby. I cleaned resized deprimed. Looking at the head stamps just by blind luck I notice that there is 257 weatherby and 270 weatherby. I know he shot all of these out of his gun. I look in my book and they seem very similar. There are a few measures that are off a bit. So is it safe to shoot these calibers out if the 7mm weatherby? Is it safe to reload to the same specs as 7mm?

The expander ball on your sizer die should have made them all the right size now, I can't think of why you couldn't use them.

The case dimensions are very close except for neck diameter. The .257 Weatherby has a case head to neck/shoulder junction length of 2.230", and may not chamber in the .270 Weatherby with a 2.221" length and the 7mm Weatherby with a 2.218" length. The other two will not chamber in the .257 because of the larger diameter bullet (we hope).

Now the question is did your father adapt these cartridges to the 7mm Weatherby chambering by necking the cases up to 7mm? Some of us loaders convert cases to other cartridges to use up excess brass. For example, the 7mm Mauser can be converted to .257 Roberts and 6mm Remington by necking down, or the other way around by expanding the neck and sizing. The danger in this is that the headstamp does not match the new configuration, which could lead to a dangerous problem for the unknowing.

My suggestion is to set the cases aside and start with new brass of a known quality. Having an accident is just not worth the price of a few cases.

I'm am pretty sure he shot them in his gun. He once tried to shoot I think 7mm win mag but couldn't close the bolt. Yes I adamantly said he should not. Can't really tell him any thing. Being fire formed now and FL resized I could then trim to length and load safely correct?

Yep, since it's been fired and re-sized.

But, your Dad is going to hurt himself or someone else. I wouldn't reload for him because I would not want to be even partially responsible when he does.

It's my father in law. I'd rather reload the right stuff for him rather than him having a kaboom next to me or the kids. He only listens if it will save him money. Very stubborn.

Not to mention he was paying 65 for 20 rounds and for the same price I get him 100 rounds.

Just finished 100 rounds of Sierra 160gr hollow point. Gunna save the other brass for a rainy day but all of your info was much appreciated. Thanks.
