A question for those that anneal

I just picked up a annealing machine, and was wondering...... for .308, how many seconds in front of the torch is recommended for each case? 6? 7?

Depends on how much heat the flame is putting on the case mouth. You know how propane pencil torch flames have an inner and outer flame? I touch the case mouth to the inner flame because it's hotter in there.

When I set up a batch to run, I put some Tempilaq temperature indicating liquid on the case mouths of a few test pieces, and I increase the time-under-flame and/or flame intensity until the Tempilaq indicates the target temperature has been reached. I think my bottle is formulated to change at 650*F, but I think 700*F would be fine too.

Yeah, I have the torch set right, and I'm set the time for 6.5 seconds. I just loaded 40 rounds and the seating tension felt very uniform, so maybe I guessed right.

I accept that Tempilaq would be the right way to do things....... but holy crap, $27/ounce? ouch!

I have the same machine. Adjust your flame and distance, then dim the lights. When the case drops off, the neck should be a dull red,
