Actually depending on the powder. There are some powders that will pretty much fill the case. (Not the norm though)
Some guys like their powder like their women, hot, cheap, dirty, that would be TiteGroup. -CocoBolo

I've spent the last couple days looking into "reloading as a newbie". Read the stickies and everything. Here's my list of what I'm thinking of picking up. I plan to reload 458 SOCOM...

            -lee 50th anniversary press kit
-hornady or Lee dies with shellholder
            -300gr. barnes tsx
            -hornady gs-1500
            -electronic caliper
            -hornady & barnes reloading books
            -Imperial case sizing lube

            And possibly:
            case trimmer
            case tumbler
Martys case gauge for 458 SOCOM

Looks like a few hundred dollars to get rolling. Not sure yet if it'll be worth it.

I literally just went through all of this (just started reloading exactly 2 weeks ago) Here is a list of everything i purchased and the rough cost (because most everything purchased on ebay was the same seller, they combined my shipping)
Lee Classic Turret Kit (www.natchezss.com had the best price/shipping) 104.99
9mm and .40 S&W Lee die sets (ebay) 41.00 (each)
                Lee Safety Prime (Ebay) 23.00
Lyman pro 1200 tumbler (eBay) 50.00
Lyman Corn Cob Media (eBay) 8.00
Frankford Arsenal Bullet puller (eBay) 15.00
So I am up reloading 9mm for less than 250.00 minus shipping. I highly suggest the bullet puller as you will make some mistakes it is inevitable. You will need dial calipers (I already have a high quality matco set). The press is great, once I got the dies and the safety prime set up I can crank out an honest 50 rounds in less than 10 minutes. One suggestion if you go this route and actually the reason I did instead of buying the single stage press. Is that you can buy extra turrets for each caliber, in an essence you only have to set up your dies once and then just swap out the turrets. They are 7.99 each from ntachezss.com. If you have any questions I can answer ill do my best

^ good info! Thanks for sharing. Sounds like that's all you'd need to get started. Just need your powder, bullets, and shells. Good call on the Dial Caliper to make sure your shells are the right length after resizing.

Which reloading manual did you get?
Who do you go through to buy brass, powder, and primers?

Get a manual, NorCal. I'm reading through my Lyman reloading manual for a 2nd time right now & I think it's great.

The brass I use is range pickups. The powder I bought an 8lb keg from a member here, primers just locally so I don't have to pay a hazmat fee to ship them. Bullets I have purchased on here from another member but if I bought new for just plinking I'd buy from xtreme

I went through this a while ago and I reload .223 and just started .40SW.

I posted up some threads asking for info a while ago. Hopefully you find them helpful:

If you have any questions let me know. Instead of spending money on a lee ball trimmer and using the drill chuck, look into the Possum Hollow .223 trimmer with the drill power adapter. Trimming .223 is horrendously annoying (and so is swaging military cases but I have yet to find an inexpensive way to get around doing that by hand).

The lee kit is the way to go. Make sure to lube your .223 cases, and get the carbide dies for .40, as they don't require lube.

                            Good luck man

Shoot once fired range pickups, and sort by non mil. If you shoot at MY range, and go once a week, in one month you will have close to 1000 pcs of once fired non military range brass. You don't have to compete with the bucket scrapers either, there's enough to go around. I scrounged 400 pcs in two trips and dealt with ZERO mil brass.
