    45-70 black powder velocities

I asked this in the black powder forum too, but I know some folks here load black as well.

Anyway, I loaded some .45-70 in new Starline cases with 405 grain lead bullets and black powder lube with CCI LRPs and 4.0 or 4.3CC (60 and 65 grains) of Goex FFFg. While I understand the FFFg will have a bit more oomph to it than FFg, I was expecting to get 1200-1300 fps out of a 24 inch barrel. What I saw was closer to 1750 with the 60 grain load and closer to 1900 with the 65. I used a compression die to compress the powder (or powder and cardboard wad, I tied both) to a little above where the back of the bullet would seat, using the bullet to compress the powder column the last 1/10th of an inch or so.

How? All I can figure is my chrono must have been reading something else, it's an older Chrony with photo gates so maybe the smoke was screwing with it. It worked fine earlier in the day with some smokeless .45 ACP loads. It was overcast so I skipped the sunshade over the photo gates.

Then my buddy shot it, so I guess I'll get a Garmin.

    Any thoughts?
