    45 colt recipe request

I'm going to take a shot at re-loading 45 colt.

I searched the forum for a recipe for 45 long colt and found powder and primer recommendations.

I found overall length recommendations for other combinations. I was not able to find an overall length listing for my combination.

    I planned to use the following components;

    Powder - Unique

    Primers - CCI Large Pistol

Brass - Starline 45 Colt Large Pistol primer

    Bullets - XTreme 45- 255 FP http://www.xtremebullets.com/plated.htm

I'd like a safe and conservative load and would appreciate any information you folks could provide. I'll be using these reloads in my Blackhawk and hopefully a new Henry H006C if I can find one.

    Regards,

I was just using Unique this weekend in my blackhawk, 8.5 gr over 200 Gr LSWC and it was chronied at 1107 FPS avg. If you dont have one already I recommend a reloading manual.

      Thanks Noonanda,

I have a manual but the overall lengths listed vary from 1.570 to 1.600 and appear to be specific to the bullet manufacturer. The one I'm using, XTreme 45- 255 FP, is not listed in the manual or on the loading sheet from Unique.

I just wanted to make sure I'm on the right path.

      Regards,

You can get load data from Hodgdon powder online. 45 LC gets really fun with 300gr + bullets and H110 powder.
I have a secret load that pushes a 335gr hard cast lead bullet out of my Blackhawk at 1325fps.

Generally with the .45 Colt you will crimp the bullet in the crimping groove and this will determine the overall length. As long as it is not too long for your cylinder you will be all right. The variation in overall length will have some effect on pressure but .030 will not have so big an effect on pressure as it does on cartridges like 9mm. Start low and work your loads up slowly. Unique is my favorite powder for .45 Colt.

Crimp it at the cannelure, use start load levels, work up slowly.

            Have fun, good luck.

Prop carver, do your xtreme bullets have a cannelure?

I don't believe they do. There is a slightly knurled line just before the bullet begins to taper.

The folks at Discount Shooter Supply in Roseville said they were what I needed.

                Regards,
