MIdwest Powders MP-75, anyone had a chance to load any?

I bought some because it was available and I'm running out of Red Dot. Anyone had a chance to load any up in shotshells or pistols?

It's Midwest Powders, so it's pulldown, or overrun, or whatever. It looks like a mix of Red Dot, Green Dot, and Clay Dot; but the label says it loads like IMR PB and gives a 12 gauge recipe (with the obvious start 10% under and go from there caveat).

I'm eventually going to get around to trying it out with 45 ACP, 45 Colt, and 38 SPC. Finding PB data for light 20 gauge is a little difficult, it would be great if I could use it there.

Don't l know if this helps you out as they aren't specifically listed as "light loads" (the manual categories are "Magnum, Field, and Target"), but here are the target loads from a 1984 manual:

Always looking for vintage Winchester and Marlin lever action rifles. Looking to sell? Know of one for sale? Drop me a line!

      Awesome, thanks!

Right now she's shooting general target loads, of AAs (nice hulls) with a 7/8oz charge @ 1200 fps (give or take). Somehwere around 1000 fps or less with a 7/8 oz charge or so would be great, but that seems to be like pulling hens teeth with 20 gauge. I've loaded plenty of heavy 12 gauge and LOTS of black powder 12 gauge, but no smokeless 20 gauge. All this load needs to do is knock down the poppers (which I can reliably do with a black powder load of 7/8 oz shot at 850 fps).

Dare I deviate from the recipe and use 15 grains instead of 16 grains of PB? And a Win 209 primer instead of a CCI? Oh heavens... If it crimps I'll run some over the chrono. If it doesn't crimp I'll add a filler wad till it does!

I would try some test loads using the data above, but dropping the 16gr charge to 14 or 15. I'll bet it will be a comfortable load to shoot, and will knock down the poppers.

What's interesting to me, perusing my two old reloading manuals, is that just about every hull/wad/primer/pellet load combo listed for PB is right at 16 grains. Looks to me that it is a pretty versatile/forgiving powder in 20 gauge applications. This is the load I'd start with - Win 209 and Win (or a Win substitute) wad. That way you're only dealing with a powder charge change.

Also, as an aside - it has been my experience that you can substitute the cheapo Remington Gun Club hulls for the STS or AA hulls, without penalty. If you have trap/skeet range close to you, once fired Gun Club hulls can be found laying all over the place, and they load very well.

The major driver for the AA hulls is extraction. A LOT of the cowboy shooters I know swear the smooth sided AA hulls extract easier/better than the ribbed hulls. Looking at it I can see that the when the cheapy target shells open, the corners of the crimp drag on the chamber and don't allow the shell to drop out. I don't know if that'll be fixed with the AA hulls, but other shooters swear it will. If it doesn't I'll try roll crimping. Looking at it the AA 20 gauge shells are factory crimped with an 8 point crimp, and the cheapy field/target loads are a 6 point, that may have something to do with it.

Hmmmm....... the Gun Club hulls I have are 8 point crimp. Nevertheless, they are ribbed (insert joke here), so if it's smooth sides you're after then AA, STS, or Premier hulls are what you're looking for. Another aside - the old AA hulls crimp well on my MEC, but the new ones have been problematic and leave a little hole in the center of the crimp that allows pellets to escape (almost ruined an opening day dove hunt when one of those errant pellets squished into the disconnect and rendered the gun useless). I suppose I could fiddle with the MEC reloader and solve the crimp issue, but it is easier to just use my seemingly endless supply of older AA and Gun Club hulls that don't give me any grief.
