260 REM out to 1000 yds?

Anyone try getting a 260 REM out to 1000 yds? I loaded a few 142gr Sierra Match Kings with 46.0gr of H4831SC. Expecting 2650fps. What are the chances these will make the distance?

    BTW, Happy New Year

      Thanks AR15Barrels.

At 1358fps, the MK bullet should still be stable. So, I guess it can reach out there.

      Which program generated that table?

If you have your chamber opened up to .260AI you can still shoot .260 Rem. out of it in a pinch, but have performance real close to 6.5x.284 without the extreme throat wear of it.

          Hmmmm!

Nah. This is still a hunting rifle. I'm just having some fun with it. If I decide to get serious I'll go with a real LR rifle.

I was pushing the SMK 142gr 2950fps out of a 28" barrel in .260 Remington. Accuracy wasn't optimal though. I needed to dial it down or up to find a better pulse in the pressure curve. This was using H4350.

Just use JBM. You can run it direct off the author's website, or download the CGIs and run it off your own Apache box.

I just use it because it came with Quickload.
If you are a reloader who likes to work outside of what normal loading manuals will tell you, Quickload is THE piece of software to own.

If you just need a drop table, JBM is certainly the way to go.

For example, here is a quickload pass on your 142 SMK in a 24" barreled 260 loaded to 60,000 PSI...

                    Code:
                    Cartridge : .260 Rem
                    Bullet : .264, 142, Sierra HPBT MatchK 1742
                    Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 2.800 inch or 71.12 mm

or a maximum loading ratio or filling of 105 %

These calculations refer to your specified settings in QuickLOAD 'Cartridge Dimensions' window.
                    C A U T I O N : any load listed can result in a powder charge that falls below minimum suggested
loads or exceeds maximum suggested loads as presented in current handloading manuals. Understand
that all of the listed powders can be unsuitable for the given combination of cartridge, bullet
and gun. Actual load order can vary, depending upon lot-to-lot powder and component variations.

It would seem that you can do a LOT better than 2650 fps.

If you just need a drop table, JBM is certainly the way to go.

For example, here is a quickload pass on your 142 SMK in a 24" barreled 260 loaded to 60,000 PSI...

It would seem that you can do a LOT better than 2650 fps.
That's alot of !DANGEROUS LOAD-DO NOT USE!. I think I like my rifles to stay in one piece But thanks.

According to the data that Randall just posted that looks like you're flirting with high pressures. How much powder are you loading?

Hodgdon H4350 loaded to a density of 101.2% (43.1 grains) with an OAL of 2.79 will get a velocity of 2765 fps out of a 24" barrel.

I can get 2900 fps out of my 26" barreled 6.5x284 with 48 grains of H4350 and the 142 grain SMK but the cases only last me about 7 reloads so I think that I'm running real close to 60,000 psi with that load.

The 284 case volume is .254 cubic inches and the 260 case volume is .209 cubic inches

I really can't tell you because I lost most of my records for my Savage .260 Remington project from a few years ago. I thought I recorded it all electronically, but I can't find any journals with .260 data.

This is the only records I could find regarding my .260 project:
Covering various aspects of competitive and recreational shooting sports (including centerfire and rimfire) as well as photography, Jeeps, and watches.

That only has chrono data for the 123gr Scenars and vague 139 Scenar data.

Dump the 142 and go with the 139 Scenars with some H4350.

Push em around 2850 and you will be good to go at 1K.

The rig I am having built right now for tactical LR is in 260rem.

You won't be able to use that for the north-south skirmish.
