Not quite understanding what you are asking. But I load seat my bullet to the OAL listed in the SAAMI Spec.

Actually I only started collecting Milsurps 3 years ago. I think I might own about 24...They're cheaper than guns that will most likely never get the opportunity to kill somebody...

I belong to the group that uses firearms, and knows which bathroom to use.

Tis better to have Trolled & lost, Than to never have Trolled, at all.

According to the Hodgdon reloading data for H4895, the COL for .223 55grain spr sp is 2.200 SAAMI. But that's based on .223

So for my 5.56 rifle with a longer leade, can I make my COL 2.200+0.077 = 2.277?

he is asking if he can seat the bullet further out from 223 SAAMI spec, because his chamber is 5.56 if I am understanding him correctly.

@ the OP, this would not work if the bullets have a cannelure. If you are loading non-cannelured bullets, it should work but I can't vouch for it being a good or bad idea.

You can load with bullets with cannulure further out. I've done it before.

The one question I would ask OP though is, Why? It doesnt really make a difference in accuracy. If you load to throat then thats different. Do you just want 5.56 spec ammo?

I find max length for reliable feeding in all magazines to be 2.25".

Thanks Guys...I was thinking about it because I have read that the extra leade may affect accuracy and velocity. Maybe it's too insignicant to worry about?

My idea was just to take SAMMI OAL and add the .07 as the general case. Then match it to my cleaning rod method measurement.

Am I on the wrong track?

One thing to consider with this : If you stay within saami 223 spec, you will never have to worry about mixing ammo if you get a 2nd rifle in 223 down the road, or mixing ammo if you have a friend who has a 223 rifle. Alot less liability if you don't increase length. Just food for thought.

Can you see 0.1" difference in the accuracy of your loads? Shoot them at your magazine length and see what the accuracy is. If you are grouping at 0.5" or less play with the seating depth to fine tune it.

If you are trying to play with the leade for accuracy purposes I am not sure how well that will work in an AR.
If you are shooting a bolt action rifle there is more play there on COAL. Semi-auto, your COAL is limited by the magazine.

I load for both my AR and a bolt action. The bolt action rifle, I seat the bullets to be .003 of the lands, which gives me great accuracy. For the AR, you are limited by the maximum length allowed by the magazine, unless you intend to single load them.
