    Dillon 650 help

So I followed the manual and the dillon DVD and assembled my press for reloading .45acp. I adjusted the tool head and made a few dummy rounds that came well within the specs of the lyman #49 book (checked with calipers and case gauge). So then I went ahead and loaded everything up and made 10 rounds, and only 3 out of 10 fit in my case gauge.
Im just wondering why they fit in the case gauge when I made practice rounds, but not now?
Is it because the machine runs different when you have a shell in every station? and are there any tweaks I need to make now? Thanks

Case gauges can be very picky.
For example, let's say I load 500 rounds. About 3-5 rounds won't case gauge. It was nothing I did, after all, I loaded all 500 just the same. A few don't case gauge because of small burrs around the rim. Others just seem to be bad brass not behaving like it's suppose to.

So it's hard to say what's causing your rounds not to case gauge. As long as you're completely removing the bell and not over crimping a lot it's probably not your fault.

The good news is I'm sure they'll fire fine assuming you'll be shooting them in a normal gun and not a super tight competition barrel.

Thanks, I wont be too concerned with it then.

I ended up adjusting the crimp die down a little and now they all fit into the case guage...but now Im having a second problem. When I make 1 or rounds for measuring, the OAL comes out betweem 1.269" and 1.271" which I am happy with(lyman calls for 1.275" OAL with my bullet)... but when I load up the system and make 10, the OAL is too long, at 1.278"-1.284"....Do you know why this may be happening? Thanks again

The final seat die adjustment is done with a full shellplate. You will get really good at compensating for this change when you are initally setting up the dies with a single case.

For .45ACP, if you set your crimp die so the OD of the case at the case mouth is .470" +/- .001", your ammo should feed really well, even in the tightest 1911 match chambers, even LSWC's will feed in my G21SF when I use the above crimp dimension.

I set my dies with a shell in each station. I had the same issue with my 9mm on my Hornady LNL AP. Made sure each station was full and problem gone.

Even if your OAL is longer than what's published, it could work nicely in your gun. Just take out your barrel and drop a case in there. If it chambers in and out easily and the bullet doesn't touch the rifling, you're good to go (the loaded rounds should also fit in the mags).

Made 10 rounds, shot them at the range to make sure they ran good and had no problems.
