I have tried fired, unsized (range pickup) cases in my chambers, they've fit. I guess it depends if the case were fired from a looser chamber and tried to be fed into a tighter chamber, it might not work.

22LR Ammo -> Snap Cap / Dummy

I say unless you have substantial experience with the safe handling of live ammo and components (like a reloader), go with lp's advice. Not limiting to 22LR (rimfire ammo), I would like to make some 9mm snap caps also.
Is that less dangerous as the rim is not sensitive to pressure?
Does the danger still persist if it is a centerfire cartridge?
In case of centerfire:
1, use spent cartridge,
2. remove primer (user primer removal tool or drill the primer)
3. remove the lead bullet from live cartridge
4 glue it to the spent + drilled primer cartridge
In case of 9mm, I should be able to buy just the lead bullet or ask for a few bare bullets from fellow local re-loaders. This would avoid the use of pliers and hence avoid danger.
What do you say?

so gluing a 9mm new bullet into a spent round would make sense without losing an eye. Correct?
Would any of you spare 10-15 bare bullets (9x19) from your supply? I don't want to buy 50 or 100 of them. I can pay for them and postage. Local (south bay FTF) preferred.
Thanks.Comment

With all due respect, and this is coming from a cheapskate that considered the same thing, spend $20 and buy the snap caps, even though it hurts.
They're blue and you can't mistake them for anything but snap caps. There's no chance of messing anything up with them (like hands LOL) or squibs or coming apart.
If the 'armorers' on the Brandon Lee movie screwed up doing this and they're pros, it's not worth fooling with, just my opinion.
PS I don't know how the armorer didn't get arrested for negligence in that 'accident'. That explanation sounds dubious.Comment

I learned what "rimfire" meant when I was a kid. I was 11 or 12 years old and had pulled the bullets from a couple of .22 rounds with pliers and poured out the powder.
For some reason, I needed some flat pieces of brass, so I was crushing the empty cases in a vise to flatten them out. I was holding one between my thumb and forefinger and began to crush the primer end in the vise. The priming compound detonated. Not only did it scare the crap out of me, but it burned my thumb pretty well.
Stupid kid, lesson learned.Just taking up space in (what is no longer) the second-worst small town in California.Comment

Not so sure if they were professional armorers, I highly doubt it. Iirc, they were behind schedule and couldn't get actual blanks in time. So they decided to pull the bullets, dump the powder, and reseat the bullets to film the loading of the gun. Days later, the blanks came in and the actor was told to fire them at Lee. At some point between those events, the bullet from the homemade dummy round became lodged in the barrel. So with a squib in the barrel and the blank behind it, it effectively became a "live" round and thus struck lee, got lodged in his spine, and after a 6 hour surgery to try and save his life, died at the hospital. I think it was a revolver, it was declared a tragic accident, and the actor that pulled the trigger went into a year long depression over it.
You can use google for more info, I always knew he died of a bullet wound during filming, but didn't know how. To this day, there are many unanswered questions surrounding the incident.Last edited by HKMadness; 04-07-2012, 7:19 AM.Show your friends your 1911's and your enemies your glocks!
