    Depriming Suggestion

    Hey guys,

I have been depriming with RCBS depriming die w/Rock Chucker.
Broke too many pins depriming 223 brass & 308 brass.

    Any suggestion?

    Different die? Different tool?
    Any information would be appreciated.

There is one good thing about RCBS, they have always replaced the ones I broke for free (great people). In all cases my stupid, a couple of .308 berdan cases slip by me.

You might consider Lee dies/decappers. The pin and shaft are held in place with a collet, so if you hit say a berdan primer the shaft and pin just slides up rather than bending or breaking.

+1 on the Lee dies. They are very sturdy but if you tighten the collet too tight, you can still break a decapping pin. Found that out the hard way.

I switched to the Lee Universal after I broke several pins with the RCBS Universal and I got tired of switching them out. The Lee Universal incorporates the pin with the entire shaft, so it's a pretty sturdy design. It's one of the few Lee products I use.

I have never broken a pin but I did manage to bend the rod by sizing military brass with crimped primers. I bougth the Lee "Hammer Powered" depriming kit for 5.56 and 7.62 which is kind of slow but unbreakable.

Use RCBS if you break something they will replace it free of charge. They are a good company.

Yes, RCBS will replace pins free of charge, but after breaking several pins in a row, it's inefficient to have to call RCBS for replacements after breaking a 25 cent pin. So I ended up getting a 100-pack of pins from Midway a few years ago as well as the Lee Universal Decapping Die.

I have a Lee universal decapping die on the way as well as a replacement pin just in case. It's only $8 on Midway right now.

How much did that cost? Do they sell them in a smaller pack like 25 per pack?

I'm not sure how much I paid since it was a long time ago. I checked Midway's page and they have them in 5 packs or 50 packs. So perhaps I bought the 50 pack. It's $13 right now for the 50.

I move slow but I make up for it by shooting poorly.

What prompted me to try the Lee Decapping die is when I started reloading LC .30-06 brass from CMP purchased M2 ball. One night I had broke several decapping pins in the RCBS universal decapping die. I had run out of replacement pins so I just left the primers in when I resized with my FL die (and let the decapping pin handle it in this step), but then broke the pin. So I took the pin out of another RCBS die and put it in the .30-06 FL sizer. I proceeded to try and resize+decap that same brass and I ended up snapping the actual expander ball / decapping pin stem.

After that, I emailed RCBS for a new stem and went to the Midway site to order the Lee Universal Decapping die and a pack of RCBS decapping pins.

The primer crimp on that LC .30-06 is pretty tight.
