i just picked up some 500 gr cast lead gas checked bullets for my marlin 1895 45-70 and i dont have load data for it. im looking to use h335 or h4198 as i have big quantities of these on hand. i was wondering if anyone had load data for these combos. i heard modern reloading by richard lee has a h4198 load data for 500gr but i dont have that book. hopefully someone reading this has that book and can look up the load info.

Modern Reloading second edition says that for lever action rifles:
It only list loads for 500 grain lead bullets using A-XMR-2495. A-XMR-4350, A-XMR-2015, A-XMR-3100, ACC XMP5744 and ACCUR 2700.
There are no loads listed for H4198 or H355.
They have H355 and h4198 500 grain bullet loads listed or "Modern bolt action rifles" and Ruger No 3s but none for your Marlin.Frank

My rifle is a Winchester (Miroku) 1886.
Using Starline brass, Federal primers, and 500gr Oregon Trail (cast) bullets I chronographed two loads using IMR-4198. As follows->
28 grains - 1306 FPS
32 grains - 1453 FPS
By contrast, two loads using Reloader 7 ->
32 grains - 1372 FPS
36 grains - 1548 FPS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After buying the 500gr O.T. bullets, I read on several forums that most people could not get this bullet to shoot well and there were many who said they keyholed no matter what powder or charge was used.
For some reason these bullets shot very well for me so when they discontinued them, I bought out Midways remaining stock - so they are no longer sold far as I know.Comment
NHH, Do you have any other loading info for 400 grain in RL7? Ive found very little info for anything above 350 grain. If its for a 1895 even better.Sandstorm Custom Rifle Slings : Custom Paracord slings
Look at the Lyman manual for ideas. There are other resources around the web for info.
Unfortunately there isn't much 45/70 data for heavier bullets for use in modern leverguns. Most data is for the 450 Marlin, which was a lawyer load created so there would be a high pressure .458 cartridge that couldn't accidently be stuffed in an old lever action.
All my 1895 loads are for bullets in the mid-400 grains to mid-500 grains.Comment
Ill check it out, Lee only list the 350 grain loads. Most stuff I found on the web was between 42 and 48 grains behind a 405 grain for medium loading. I loaded some up with 42, and 45 to test out, and wouldn't be to stout for my GF to shoot. She enjoyed shooting the factory Remington stuff, which is pretty light.Look at the Lyman manual for ideas.
