How far does the little crimp remover have to go into the primer pocket in order for it to be effective? The instructions weren't too clear to me

Trial and error method is used. Brass will vary in hardness and thickness so it will basically be trial and error to determine what works. Mixed brass can be challenging. I would actually try priming a few of the swaged cases to varify your setting. On some of my cases I noticed the flash hole burr was getting flattened and somewhat blocking the flash hole so I ended up using a flash hole deburring tool to remove that before swaging.
