Safely discharging primers before decapping?

I had a few cases that didn't fully size and it took a good amount of force to pull back the charging handle when I was test-cycling them through my rifle. I pulled the bullets and now I want to re-resize the cases. Is there any safe way to discharge the primers before resizing? Don't want to decap a live primer haha. If I took the pin out of the resizing die would that work, or should I try to safely discharge them somehow?

Decapping a live primer can be done safely, just go slow. But yes, you can just take the pin out and size the brass being careful not to lube inside the case. You would then have to hand remove the lube.

There are many ways to disable a primer before decapping.

That being said, I have never done so. I have decapped live primers on quite a few occasions without problems.

Could there be? Yes.

I de-cap at a slow and steady speed with minimal force. It isn't like decapping an expended round. If you lack self-control, disable the primer with oil or water soak. I don't because I usually reuse the decapped primers that are live. Have yet to have one fail to ignite on reuse.

Yes you can decap a live primer and reuse it. I've done it. Instead of the sizing die, I use the universal decapping die. You must go very slowly and wear safety glasses, don't stand over the press at all.

You can drip a drop of gun oil into the primer from the neck and basically defuse it. At least that's what my dad always did.

Thanks for the info everyone. I'll try my decapping die and reusing the primers. I'll definitely wear my face shield when i'm doing it.

Why even decap if you are going to need a primer in the brass?? Just move the de-cap stem up some so it does not punch out the primer but will still expand the neck on the downstroke of the press. This way you resize the case but do not have to mess with the primer.

My sizer dies do not get to meet and play with live primers, Just me folks.
