    7.62 x 39

I am building and Ak-47 and I am trying to find a decent round that will not be rough on the rifle. I was told that the cheap Steel case Tula ammo is no good. I want to buy bulk, but I do not want to pay an arm and a leg for it.

    What about mil surplus?

    Thanks

It was my understanding that an AK will eat pretty much all ammo, steel case cheap stuff included. If it was an AR15 you may want to stick to brass but i don't think it matters with an AK. I'm building one next month and would like to know if thats true since i'll be in the same boat soon...

AKs were built for steel-cased ammo. You'll be fine.

Personally, I like Golden Tiger, it's been the most consistent 7.62x39 ammo for me. Yugo surplus is pretty good, too, although it's corrosive. Also, Yugo surplus being brass-cased is an oddity of sorts. Most countries that use 7.62x39 produce steel-cased ammo for their rifles. Once again, they build those rifles with steel cases in mind.

The only reason I even bought the brass-cased boxer-primed ammo (MFS and Fiocchi) was to get reloadable brass. That, and they were on sale for the price that wasn't much over the regular run-of-the-mill stuff ($6.50/box shipped).

Don't take offense, but saying "I don't want to shoot cheap steel cased ammo through my AK-47" is like saying "I only want to shoot blanks through my gun because I don't want to wear out the barrel".

The AK-47 was made to shoot cheap steel cased ammo like Tula, get dragged through rice paddy's in the monsoon season, adjust front sight windage with a rock and be buried in the sand for years, then pulled out and fought with. It will eat any ammo you feed it and probably outlast you. Shoot the heck out of it and have fun!

No offense taken. I have a friend telling me to stay away from any steel ammo for my soon to be Ak. I thought the same thing that you just said, but I would rather ask for help then think I know all and screw my rifle up.

Thanks for the help. The cost of shooting went down. lol

AKs are made to be disposable guns. I firget but, I think they were designed for with either a 10K or 20K round life to begin with. So, don't worry about steel cases, the barrel will be shot out before any problems develop from shooting steel.

i shot mil suplus and tula ammo all day long with my AK. Ive shot winchester and remington, its more accurate but its rediculiously expensive. your not going to damage your gun with "steel cases." FPS is the real killer
