    Got a Dillon XL 650...Questions

Well I was in the market for a reloader and a friend of mine was getting rid of his. I wanted a 550 but I couldnt pass up this deal on a 650, since it was cheaper than a 550 and has everything I need to start reloading .45acp. I bought the DVD from dillon about setting up the 650, but I have no experience reloading. Im trying to locate someone In my county (kern) that can show me, but for now I just have the DVD. Do you guys thing that will be sufficient to get me started? THanks

That was my initial plans but the guy moved out of town which is why he sold it. I also picked up lyman #49, so I am going to try to get started with those

I set mine up with just the instruction manual. But I have been loading for many years which might help. The Lyman book is the best for general knowledge about reloading and will answer 90% of your questions. Add the Dillon instructions and some common sense and you will be ok. You will need a scale(beam or electronic) also if you do not have one. I am too far to help but if you PM me I will give you my phone number and I can probably walk you thru anything you need. I am retired so you can call most anytime. You will like the 650. Get the roller handle as it is so much better and worth the cost if you do not have it.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

Also check BrianEnos.com. There is a lot of Dillon specific info on his reloading boards.

What calibers are you going to reload?

                  Starting off with only .45, then I'll get into .223, 9mm, .40, and .308

Pistol is fine, set up each step as you go,ie. get your sizing die set up correctly first. All follows a logical sequence.priming, powder loading and bullet seating. The instruction manual is online at the Dillon site, you can print it out.

Starting with pistol calibers is a good step. .223/.308 are not anymore or less difficult they just have a few more steps.

There is a sticky at the top of the reloading section that will walk you through his version of bulk/batch processing for rifle rounds. I have yet to discover a more efficient way. Allthough I do run mine wet(only due to the fact I do not have a lube die its on the list) It isnt that messy to clean up though.

IMHO a 650 will make very precise rounds, however IT shines at making ALOT of rounds per hour though. If your wanting pie plate at a few hundred yards and lots of them the 650 is the best tool out there. If your attempting to make uber precise one at a time to make one ragged hole at 1000 yards you might want a single stage.

The 650 was my first press. I bought it used. I got it up and running easily using nothing more than the instructions, this place, and a reloading manual or two for load data.
