    7.62x54r "steel core"

hi, i recently purchased a mosin nagant to just shoot around with. i was looking online and was wondering

    - are the surplus steel core ammo cans aka spam cans legal in california?

-is it legal to order any kind of steel core ammo for a rifle? i don't know if its considered armor piercing.

thanks in advance, i just get confused with california's gun laws and wanted to do things right.

Steel core ammo is legal to possess (no CA gun law against it). Some ranges do not allow it. Some ranges don't allow it depending on the season (fire season). It is not legal to shoot steel core ammo on BLM land (fire danger). Spam cans can contain anything so don't assume all spam cans are steel core.

thank you very much rsrocket1. i appreciate it. from everything i was reading i could not for the life of me find anything that said it was either illegal or legal. the only thing that was getting me is sometimes as per what i've read an incendiary round or armor piercing round might get mixed in due to it being surplus. is an armor piercing round for a rifle legal to purchase. not that i'm going to purchase it, just in case it gets mixed up with a batch in a spam can.

Don't worry about it Joe. What Rocket said is absolutely correct.

Just make sure your range allows it before you buy. It is pretty frustrating having a couple cans of ammo and nowhere to shoot it.

By the way, there is no lead at all on the steel core bullets that I have; it is a steel jacket over a steel core.
